I started bing watching this show about a week ago... did not realize it was over 40 years old.
The cloths and dialogue are really funny now but the one item that is driving me crazier that I already was is the gun handling....

Of course it is a cop show and so there has to always be some guns pulled and aimed as well as someone shot in just about every episode. But I'm up to season 2 and every time someone pulls their gun they have their finger on the trigger, I mean every time... just got through with a standoff with about 25 or so cops hiding behind their cars with guns drawn.... revolvers & shot guns and I swear every one of them had their finger on the trigger. Oh, and I have yet to see a semi-auto pistol anywhere.....

When I was in college I worked student security. They changed my name to Howard, the swat officer on HSB, to differentiate me from an officer with the same name.

Great show. I have the complete set on DVD.

Great show although it's showing it's age. Gotta love Lt. Norman Buntz, who comes to the show with a built in Chicago accent and a lot of street smarts. He was even better in NYPD Blue.

HSB was the one that showed the way for all the police procedurals that came after. NYPD Blue, Law & Order, CSI, NCIS, all of them use the same 'story within a story' arcs in their series and seasons.

Hill St. Blues started it all.

Because at that time, there weren't any semi autos on the streets for the most part. Hill Street Blues started in the early 1980s. I started in 1982 as a National Guard Combat MP, then active duty Air Force Security Police/Law Enforcement Specialist and then a civilian LEO. Here are my issued pistols:

1. WW2 1911
2. S&W Model 15 .38 caliber revolver
3. Beretta 9mm (was stationed outside Continental US so was among first units issued the Beretta)
4. S&W Model 15 again (changed duty station to continental US base and back to revolver).
5. Beretta (finally issued to continental US bases)
6. S&W Model 64 .38 caliber revolver(first civilian LEO job and my issued pistol was a real piece of crap-slightly bent barrel and shaved lead big time)
7. S&W 4006 (fucking boat anchor and another POS pistol- de cock/safety lever would drop unexpectedly when doing double taps so the "armorer" would fix it by using a hammer so the de-cock/safety would never move again....no I am not kidding)

10. Glock 17

It was probably in the early 1990s, after the FBI had gone to the .40 short and weak that departments started to go to semi autos.
