I'm not a big sci-fi fan these days. The utter fanaticism of many supposed adults for the genre has been really off-putting for me, as well as the near-complete hijacking of the genre by woke idiots.

I came across the Heroes & Icons network (DirecTV channel 385) and ran right into an episode of Star Trek which I hadn't seen in years, but remembered well (Metamorphosis, originally broadcast November 10, 1967), as I remember all episodes of the series, since the show was in syndication in the 1970s and I have seen every episode at least ten times.

Well, this was a nice bit of nostalgia. Imagine my surprise when I noticed that the opening credits had been changed and "updated" with CGI, and that all views of space, planets, outer-space objects and external views of the Enterprise, the shuttles and all other craft have received the same treatment.

Additionally, the same horrid treatment that the original Twilight Zone series episodes received has been given to Star Trek- namely, the frame rate has been altered from the original 30 frames per second (the NTSC broadcast standard) to a video frame rate of 60 frames per second.

Star Trek (and The Twilight Zone) was shot on film at 24 fps and broadcast at 30 fps, which gives these classic shows their native appearance, and even those of you who do not concern yourselves with these details can see the difference; not at every moment, but at certain points in these shows which have had their frame rate screwed with, there is a discernible difference in how things appear on the screen, and all of it having to do with how objects appear when they move on screen.

I understand why they've done this; they own the rights to these films and they can alter them as they wish, and they strive to make them palatable to younger audiences. Nevertheless, those who chose to make these changes are tasteless cretins.

To honor these classic TV shows, they should be left alone in this respect. Bringing the shows back to their original color palate and sharpening the image- these things are not objectionable; they enhance the experience of viewing them. However, when substantial segments of the original episodes are removed and replaced with CGI- that is objectionable. When such alterations are made, viewers are no longer seeing episodes in their entirety. This is, in a word, wrong, and for some of us who remember the original series with its sometimes cheesy special effects, it detracts from the viewing experience.

I understand your frustration Para.

Lucas did this to the first Star Wars movie (A New Hope, 1977) many years ago.

When this movie first came out CGI barely existed, everything was done via models.

At some point in the 90s he “cleaned it up” and in many fans opinions ruined it.

It is nearly impossible now to find a version of the 1977 film in its original form.

#HanShotFirst

From Movieweb.com

“There were a lot of visual and audio changes to A New Hope that were more subtle than entire scenes being added or edited. Some things, like the Jawa Sandcrawler and some of the shots with X-Wings, were replaced by CGI. Some creatures or robots were added to scenes on Tatooine. Obi-Wan's Krayt Dragon sound was changed several times over the years. Changes were made to several Death Star scenes, including adding more Stormtroopers to chase Han Solo and modifying Obi-Wan's lightsaber's glare and colour. Notably, one change corrected a mistake, changing Luke's lightsaber. In some releases of the training scene on the Millennium Falcon, Luke's Lightsaber is green when it should be blue, and some releases fix this problem.

These graphical changes have also been criticized. Changes to Mos Eisley, as outlined by Screen Rant, have been noted as making the town feel too busy and normal, making it lose some of its mystique as a dangerous town. Some also criticize these sorts of changes on the basis that it changes the original movie

Well played… I’m 54 years old I should’ve known better! Lol

For the uninitiated, “a new hope“ was not part of the original Star Wars crawl.

We had this debate 15 years ago when they did the HD remaster and got to charge a new fee for syndicated TV stations to help pay for it, and the original episodes with the improved video quality and the original model work is still available on Blu-Ray.

They’re doing the same to music. I started a free trial of Apple Music (cause it’s free) and everything from the 70s, 80s and 90s is a remaster. I just want to hear Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Metallica, Megadeth, etc the way I remember them, not cleaned up and sterile. Half of it sounds robotic because they took out every little aspect deemed an imperfection. Mad

True, but it was added shortly thereafter in 1981, right after Empire came out and before Return. This wasn't part of the later more significant Special Edition revisions in the 1990s.

Certainly makes the case for buying DVD's of Movies and TV shows that you love.

I feel pretty lucky that I bought all 3 seasons of the original series on DVD at Costco almost 20 years ago. No alterations that I know of.

As long as I have a DVD player, I should be set.

As a kid growing up in the 70's I watched every episode of the original series. It was a part of my childhood. I want to see episodes as I saw them then, warts and all. Kirk's fight with the Gorn was super cheesy, but as a 7 year old in pre CGI 1975 it was awesome. Today, the Enterprise in the opening scenes looks like a model toy, back then it didn't. The nostalgia is gone if it isn't the same thing I remember.
I need to start looking for some unaltered DVDs.

That's the Blu Ray set that offers both versions plus a lot of special features including audio commentaries and documentaries. It's also not like what they did with Star Wars on one of the DVD releases where the "Special Edition" got the better picture and audio while the original version was a leftover from the Laserdisc release that was widescreen but not formatted for 16:9 TVs.

I hadn't seen any of the original episodes in forever, but this news SUCKS. I've always been a Trekie, and it's bad enough how most of the new series/movies are getting screwed up.

To alter old episodes so that they lose the FEEL? WTF?

If it wasn't for the internet, unaltered episodes of the original series would start to become damn near impossible to find, like the original, unaltered Star Wars movies.

I think you're referring to the circa 2006 "remastering." I'm not thrilled with it either. In particular, my favorite episode, "The Doomsday Machine," might as well be renamed "The Giant Space Turd." Watch comparisons between the original and remastered, especially the battle scene between the Enterprise and the titular machine, and you'll see what I mean.

Exactly this!
I have never stopped purchasing physical media. I actually bought 3 discs today.
I have everything I own digitized without compression. I suggest you do the same.

I have a nice sized hard drive and rip everything using MakeMKV for video DVD, BluRay, and 4K BluRay. I digitize my CDs with Exact Audio Copy.
I then use Plex as a media server and I can stream all my owned media to any device in the house or anywhere I am.

I find it kind of funny that y'all are wanting DVD's of the original Star Trek series. When that series first came out not only was there no such thing as a DVD ...heck there wasn't even VCR tapes. To really watch the episodes in their original version would you not need to find the original tapes... play them and then broad cast them to a 19" 1960's black and white TV? That would be Big Screen!

have often wondered why some of these old TV shows don't look right... this 60frames a second conversion and probably digital enhancement is the reason....
