As good as the writing and characters are in Justified, the missing element is the monochrome claustrophobia seen in Harlan County USA. Maybe pretty people and bleak aren't the best mix for commercial appeal. Still two great and different shows.

I agree the writing was well done & rife with snappy repartee. The characters were so well formed as to nearly be a caricature of themselves in many cases, though very entertaining. That being said, I feel it got a little thin in the later seasons.

@ Para - give it a go. You'll know within a few episodes if it's for you. I'm of the belief you gotta go beyond the first episode, which sets up as a stand-alone pilot (IMO) but establishes the premise for the rest of the series. Sorry for the thread drift.

I'm a fan of Justified, but it can't hold a candle to Deadwood. In fact, I'm not sure what T.V. series can.

Yes, an excellent documentary. Some documentaries, you see them once and that's enough, but Harlan County, USA is such a rich film, it's worthy of repeated viewings.

Finally watched -- worth the time.

A bit off topic but clicked in because I saw Harlan County. My mother’s line comes from that area and her uncle, who died fighting in WWII near Bastogne, was named Harlan. I also spent a week about the now defunct USS Harlan County.
