P250UA5Orson Scott Card - Ender & Shadow series
I've probably read Ender's Game a dozen times & the whole core series [8 books IIRC] 3 or 4 times.

LoswsmithIn addition to the three enthusiastic recommendations of Heinlein, Scalzi (Old Man's War series) and the Expansiverse by J. A. Corey:
Two oldies:
Startide Rising by David Brin
Footfall by Jerry Pournelle and Larry Niven, which you probably read but maybe not
Some new ones:
The Prador War/Polity series by Neal Asher which are loads of books
Shards of Earth Adrian Tchaikovsky, first in a trilogy
Altered Carbon Richard Morgan, a trilogy
And with my CUT and quote how could I not endorse the Culture series by Iain Banks
I've got hundreds more depending on what you like. This is my jam.

P250UA5I really enjoyed Altered Carbon on Prime, didn't know it was a book series as well

SchmelbyMy brother recommended Daniel Suarez, I read Kill Decision and liked it.
Maybe I'll try another of his.
Probably been beatin to death, I read Dune when I was a teenager in the 70's,
liked the movie, got my son into it, bought a copy and plan to read it again.
I have about a dozen new books I plan to read!

Yup, the two others
Broken Angels and
Woken Furies are very good.
While I really liked the Netflix stuff, the books were, per usual, better. And while the Altered Carbon (pretty faithful) and Woken Furies (not very) storylines were shown, Broken Angels was not.

sjtillI’ve read pretty much everything by
Jerry Pournelle
Larry Niven
Larry Correia
…and highly recommend; along with Heineken of course.

SigJacketGlen Cook, The Dragon Never Sleeps
(Big fan of his Black Company and Garrett, PI series, but those are fantasy)
The Honorverse from David Weber. That will occupy you for awhile. Horatio Hornblower…in space!
The Steps of the Sun from Walter Tevis.
Daniel da Cruz Texas series is fun. Don’t think too hard about it.
Expeditionary Force from Craig Alanson is terrible… but it makes me laugh so I keep buying them.
The Bobiverse series from Dennis Taylor.
Marko Kloos has several military sci-fi series that are worthwhile.
Retief! From Keith Laumer.
Anything Hammers Slammers from David Drake.
Planets of Adventure from Murray Leinster. That’s definitely old school.

Ahhh . . . beer and sci-fi. Two greats that go great together [insert winky emoji]!
Also, second the David Weber stuff, especially the early books. Very good and detailed and well thought out.
In a similar vein: the Empire of Man books by John Ringo and David Weber, and the Posleen series of books by John Ringo beginning with
A Hymn Before Battle. Ringo has several other series' that are good as well.

sjtillThanks for the laugh at my (very little) expense!
Speaking of John Ringo, he wrote/co-wrote with Larry Correia three novels I think called Monster Hunter Memoirs; they are an excellent addition to the MHI universe.

Ringo's Poslean War series was good. But his zombie series was better IMHO.
Dune is good, but it's complex
Haldeman's the Forever War is excellent, and has a sequel or 2,

How about the 4 lords of the diamond? Assuming heinlein novels were already covered, the stainless steel rat series, Spider Robinson and the like..
I don't think Harrison's Stainless Rat series holds up that well anymore but Spider Robinson's
Mindkiller is one of my favorites. It was updated at some point is now called
Deathkiller. It is part of a trilogy that is worthwhile,

tartan427If you like military Sci-Fi, the late David Drake's Hammer Slammers series is outstanding. John Scalzi's Old Man's War series is well worth reading as well.

K0ZZZI was just going to do a reread on Michael Z Williamson's book Freehold and the rest of the series.

Just don't watch the movie

One of my favorite series & the movie was watered-down awful.
Even went to the theater opening night & left disappointed.
Granted, I'm sure it's a tough thing to film, live-action, without being R
