I would not have picked them to sing together, but hey what do I know? Evidently nothing.

The in-movie band for Rock Star, Steel Dragons, is composed of former hair metal members of various bands. They performed several songs for the soundtrack.

This is an obvious one, a great music collaboration, David Bowie and Queen.

You mean like a supergroup, where all the members were already successful elsewhere? Like, say… The Power Station? A funky disco drummer from Chic, guitar and bass from the brothers from Duran Duran and a reggae influenced frontman with a solo career. Covering a song from T.Rex.

A great, if overplayed example of different successful artists getting together is "Beat It" from Michael Jackson's Thriller album, perhaps his most iconic song and the most iconic song from the 1980s. Of course it sold a shit ton and won Record of the Year, etc. For fans, the song was just a Michael Jackson song with an Eddie Van Halen solo slapped on it, but his involvement was more complicated. Originally, he was to solo over the middle break in the song, where Jackson repeats "beat it" in an echo effect, but EVH felt the solo needed to be played over chord changes. On his own without any input from Jackson or Quincy Jones, EVH had the engineer cut and splice the master tape to re-arrange the song with the verse playing after the break, then the chorus, with him soloing over the verse. This of course changed the song, and Jackson and Jones loved the result. But cutting and splicing the tape ruined the SMPTE timecode syncing various master tapes, forcing the Toto guys to go back and recut the drums and rhythm guitar parts all over again. EVH did not receive any money, songwriting or arranging credits or any royalties for his work, but was happy to be part of the song. And ironically, Thriller kept Van Halen's 1984 album from reaching number one on the Billboard charts, only getting to number 2.
