Today I was listening to YT videos about Mike Campbell and his guitars. I got to thinking, I never saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I’ve seen many bands and solo artists that I admire going back to the 70s and I’ve continued to see performers I admire today, although I’m through with huge tours.

I never saw Tom Petty, and today I regret that.

Never seeing Tom Petty is a regret, but not as much as:

Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd

I have a couple, all while I was in Germany with the Army in the 1990s:

REM: had tix for a big show in 1995 and at the last second they canceled their tour as a band member got really sick and almost died

Billy Joel: had a chance to see River Of Dreams tour in 1994 (I think) and missed it

Always loved Boston and never got a chance to see them and then Brad Delp died and I knew it was never going to happen. This current "Boston" band is nothing more than a cover band

I saw Petty & the Heartbreakers once during their Torpedoes tour and it was good. The 2nd time was before he died when he toured with his old band Mudcrutch with Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench. They did not play and Petty/Heartbreaker songs at all, and it was a great concert.

The one concert I regret not seeing, and I had a chance to attend, was Led Zeppelin. They used to play long stretches at the Forum in L.A. and I never managed to get a ticket. And also seeing The Police on their first tour in 1979, just couldn't get it together to see them at the end of my senior year in high school.

Oddball, I never saw Led Zeppelin either, but I don’t recall having an opportunity. I envy you the two shows you saw with Petty. Both the Heartbreakers and Mudcrutch just played great rock n’ roll; I don’t recall having an opportunity to see them either.

I did see one of the bands mentioned two or three times, Pink Floyd. I’m sure I’ve posted about the show before, but it was what I would call a pre-tour of DSOM, just months before the release of the album that led to stadium concerts and then shows like Gdansk. I saw them in Denver University Arena. Until Dark Side exploded, Pink Floyd could be described as a cult band. They played songs from the DSOM album.

Barry Goudreau continues to play in the local Boston/South Shore area if you ever want to make the trip.

biggest regret was the Clash,

they hit DC a time or 2, but I did not find out till a few days later (2 hrs south of DC)

Oingo Boingo played local (RVA) but I missed them,

back in the 80's, it was hard to find out about concerts, no internet, you had to be dilligent about checking the local stores that sold tickets

^^^ I was fortunate to see Chicago a few times back in their heyday. First was at Foxboro Stadium with the Beach Boys in 1975. Another highlight was with the Doobie Brothers much later, but really enjoyed when they got together at the end and played each other's songs.

Stevie Ray Vaughan.

He was playing at Alpine Valley, Wisc, about an hour away, but I decided to take a pass and figured I'd catch him next time he was in the Chicago area. Frown

Saw REM twice.

First time was in 1984 at the Egyptian Theater in DeKalb, IL. That venue was way too small for them. The sound was so bad that you could not even tell what song they were playing. I ended up walking out.

But, I saw them again a few years later (1987) at the UIC Pavillion in Chicago and they were great.
