Just found this. hadn't seen it since I saw it, appropriately enough, at a drive in, before the movie.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." -- C.S. Had a girlfriend back in the 80's that did that, she used thin tape above where the line went to guide her finger. Curved brush, special paint in small cans.
It's an art, for her anyways, for just a few years. I believe as you get older it becomes more difficult to stay steady.
She went on to airbrush stuff, did well.
Cars would get one or two lines down the side, some thing on hood and trunk.
Antique cars were fun for her, spoked wheels, square doors, etc. She really enjoyed doing those.

Mack Brush is in neighboring Jonesville. Pretty much all serious pinstripers use their brushes which they make right here.

Check out their Hall of Fame pages if you enjoy the art.

In the 70's there was a guy out of California that used to travel the U.S. doing pinstriping. I don't remember how he got the word out where he was going to be, maybe car mags or surf mags. he was damn good.
If I remember correctly he went by HANGMAN.
