It is funny how "car folks" see beauty in an automobile, and others just see transportation.....such a shame!!!

Hence, my love of Italian cars. Art for art's sake.

Nice, they didn't have an LM, but the 250 GT SWB California went for $17 mill and is great looking, very "Ferris Buellerish"

When I was a kid growing up in a Chicago suburb, there were a couple Gullwings in the neighborhood.

I remember one owner of a silver car used to drive around town on hot summer days with both gullwing doors open, which was strictly forbidden by M-B as it strained the mounting hardware.

Another time, I think it was a black one I saw, and the owner took a few minutes to give me the tour. He had lined the engine bay with stainless steel to try and reduce heat (don't understand how that would work), and said he was a friend of David E Davis, which was pretty impressive to a budding car nut in the Midwest like me.

It's truly sad that the only way to experience one of these cars today is to see them in museums or collections. They, along with Ferraris, Aston-Martins etc, were frequently on the road and seen in the area. One kid even drove his father's Lotus sports racer to high school on nice spring days, possibly a Lotus 23B.

I got lucky & met a guy that had a 57 Gullwing. Supposedly the 'last one' built. I assume it was the last US Spec car built.
He bought it with his dad & brother for $250k in boxes & did a full restoration on it.
Red over tan interior & had the luggage set for it too.
Got a brief ride in it & was scared to breathe on the thing, but it was an awesome ride for what was a 50 year old car. IIRC, at the time, they'd turned down a $2M offer for it.
