I played Anchors Away because you are suppose to play it before The Marines Hymn. I always hated that

The service and academy bands and choruses are the best. They always perform the music as it was intended, without unnecessary flourishes. Count on them for the best rendition of our National Anthem as well.
 

When you get the order to sing such songs because it’s what the army likes, you are getting tired of it one day. At least that’s how I feel about such songs. If there was a theme I like it was “Green Field of France” by The men they cound not hang.

I was wondering why this thread was started, then I remembered every Fourth of July show i’ve Seen had the vets and active stand as the songs were played. It’s a good touch and a bene for having served.

The Navy Band came to our high school once. So good. We wouldn't let them leave until they played Anchors Aweigh.

Ben McCulloch was a real person. Interesting character. Knew Davy Crockett and planned to go with him to Texas, but contracted measles while in Louisiana. Crockett went ahead to San Antonio and met his fate at the Alamo. McCulloch, however, played a significant role in the Battle of San Jacinto, and the defeat of Santa Anna’s army.

Wilson’s Creek was an actual Civil War battle that McCulloch’s forces won, in spite of being poorly armed. The song also correctly states that McCollough “lost his life” in Arkansas in 1862.
As others have written, not many song writers can put themselves into character, 150 years ago, and pull it off.

Of course, Joshua Chamberlain and the 20th Maine heroically defended Little Round Top at Gettysburg.
