I was reading this on FB today.... From Cinema Flashback The famous chicken salad sandwich scene in Bob Rafelson's 1970 drama Five Easy Pieces is a masterclass in anti establishment rebellion capturing the frustration of a man trapped by arbitrary rules Jack Nicholson's character Bobby Dupea attempts to order a side of wheat toast but is thwarted by a waitress who refuses to make substitutions leading to a legendary exchange where he orders a chicken salad sandwich hold the chicken to get what he wants The scene's explosive climax where Bobby sweeps all the glasses off the table was drawn directly from Nicholson's own life He had once done the exact same thing at a coffee shop after a manager confiscated his coffee because his friends had been lingering too long The film's gritty realism and Nicholson's raw performance helped define the New Hollywood era making Bobby Dupea a symbol of alienation and restless energy that resonated deeply with nineteen seventies audiences Link | |||
