| Staring back from the abyss |
Couldn't sleep again tonight and stumbled across this movie. Liev Schreiber leads as a grizzled/dying/troubled Army colonel in Venice who meets a much younger and beautiful Italian girl. It is based on the Hemingway novel of the same name, which I now intend to try to trudge through. I find Hemingway to be a very difficult read, but I really enjoyed this story, so we'll see how it goes. I found this film very poignant, but then I'm a bit of a softy and rather enjoy these types as very thought provoking. The one negative take-away that I had from the film was that it was based in (I think) 1948 and Schreiber was an active duty 0-6 with a full scruffy beard. I have no issues with beards and have had one since the day I ETS'd, but it just rubbed me the wrong way that they would make such an obvious mistake with the main actor in a film. Maybe I missed something... Anyway, I liked it. You may as well. ________________________________________________________ It is long past time for a Convention of States.
