I really enjoy good Science Fiction. I usually "read" it by listening to Audible while I'm working. This week I ran into a good series from back in the 70's, The Giants" series by James Hogan. It's kind fun catching all the things that make you realize it's not current like Smoking on Airplanes. Someone being happy with a $30,000 per year salary etc. but still it's an enjoyable read/listen. Best thing was that the 3 book series was FREE on Audible because I'm a member. There's several others I'm getting for free too. I'd like to hear some your favorite Sci-Fi series like Heinlein, Niven's Ringworld, etc etc. I'm getting a little fed up with some of the new stuff and it's over the top PC and too more gay relationships than hetereo. I guess old Sci-Fi had it's issues too but it in general is more comfortable to me. Anyway I hope to hear some good Sci-Fi recommendations and I hope some of you other members are on Audible and can grab some good free books too............. Remember, this is all supposed to be for fun...................

A. Bertram Chandler (sp?) has a long series of books about his space captain/pilot John Grimes. These are all decent books and Grimes will remind you of Lazarus Long/Heinlein's protagonists. If you like fantasy swords and a little magic type stuff, try Robert Jordan - Wheel of Time series. about 15 large books worth. ------------------ SBrooks

Anything Heinlein. Anything at all. I've read and re-read and re-re-read most of them. Spider Robinson's Callahan series and some of this other stuff. William Forstchen, both his post-apocolyptic One Minute/One Year after, and Pillar to the Sky. Plus I've been a subscriber to Analog magazine since the 70's. Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

I got 11 books into the Wheel of Time series and was wondering why it just stopped. Found out that Robert Jordon unfortunately passed away. I waited a couple years for Brandon Sanderson to finally write to final book and when it finally came out it was going to be 3! more books aaaaaagghhhh. I need to only read complete series I think. LOL I don't have the patience to wait YEARS 2005-2103 for the finale! Remember, this is all supposed to be for fun...................

Huge Heinlein fan, but you've got that covered. If you haven't read Asimov, I'd start with the Robot or Foundation series. -Rob I predict that there will be many suggestions and statements about the law made here, and some of them will be spectacularly wrong. - jhe888 A=A

I really liked “The Weapon Shops of Isher” by A. E. van Vogt. A good read, and yeah, a pro-gun story! Serious about crackers

One of my favorites from years ago is Mindkiller by Spider Robinson. Sadly, it cannot be found in any e-format but used copies are available. Mindkiller by Spider Robinson It's also part of the Lifehouse Trilogy w/ two other of his books, (available in one hardcover) that I also enjoyed. I see that one is also available used. I enjoy picking up used books on Amazon as many of the old ones are not available in the e-version. They are often priced good and often like new.

Okay, for good sci-fi without any of the new feels: Try: The Niven/Pournelle collaberations in Footfall and Mote in God's Eye The the trio collaberation of Vien/Pournelle and Steven Barnes in the Legacy of Heorot series David Weber and the Honor Harrington series John Ringo and the "Empire of Man" and his Posleen series starting with Gust Front David Drake with Hammer's Slammers and the Lt. Leary RCN series (two different things) Jerry Pournelle and his Falkenberg's Legion series And while is not really old school, R.M Meluch's Tour of the USS Merrimack series starting the The Myriad ___________________________________________ Life Member NRA & Washington Arms Collectors Mistake not my current state of joshing gentle peevishness for the awesome and terrible majesty of the towering seas of ire that are themselves the milquetoast shallows fringing my vast oceans of wrath. I absolutely feel you here (only I got this feeling at book six, I mean seriously if Jordan wasn't dead . . . ) Because of that absolutely justified fear however, I'm recommending these two series separately. First its the Expanse series by "S.A.Corey" Starting with Leviathan's Wake. It's fantastic and you can "end" it if you want at Nemesis Games and be "done" with the series with just a few loose ends that come back in spades in the next books (which aren't done yet). It might also be getting the GOT treatment since the Amazon series is popular and getting close to the where the books are. But IMHO it's the closest look at "real" SF without the angst you don't want. And for runner up, since you didn't squash the WOT series for not being SF, I will recommend The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss. The NOTW is BY FAR my favorite non-SF book, and it might just be my favorite book of all time. HOWEVER, the third book of the series is officially ten years overdue. But there are possible endings in sight. Anyway those two are great, but not finished. ___________________________________________ Life Member NRA & Washington Arms Collectors Mistake not my current state of joshing gentle peevishness for the awesome and terrible majesty of the towering seas of ire that are themselves the milquetoast shallows fringing my vast oceans of wrath. Lots of good recommendations here. I was always a big fan of Harlan Ellison. "But, as luck would have it, he stood up. He caught that chunk of lead." Gunnery Sergeant Carlos Hathcock "If there's one thing this last week has taught me, it's better to have a gun and not need it than to need a gun and not have it." Clarence Worley

Don't think I've seen these folks mentioned yet: --Poul Anderson --Anne McCaffrey --Ursula Leguin --Ben Bova ...there's many others beyond the well known Asimov, Clarke, and Heinlein. Like PHPaul, I grew up reading John Campbell's Analog magazine (although I was subscribing from the very late '50s - early '60s) so I remain very fond of old time Sci-Fi authors. I loved the Pip and Flinx Humanx Civilization series. Both of my boys have read the series multiple times (on Audio) also. Alan Dean Foster is very enjoyable and prolific too! The Expanse was my favorite recent Sci-Fi series. Been through all of them. The First Law series by Joe Abercrombie is a good series for those that like fantasy series. I see that Lots of folks in here have some of the same tastes. Weapon shops of Isher and more Van Vogt, all of Heinlein. Dunno if anyone else has read the Dorsai series from Gordon Dickenson but I remember really enjoying it years back...... Remember, this is all supposed to be for fun...................

William Gibson's Neuromancer opened the doors of the cyberpunk genre for me. Read the following novels and watched Johnny Mnemonic movie with K. Reeves. Altered Carbon tv series was fine too. 0-0 "OP is a troll" - Flashlightboy, 12/18/20
