Actors that seem to only play one character
You know the type. They take different roles but they play basically the same personality no matter if it’s an action thriller or romantic comedy.

Ryan Reynolds comes to mind.

Another is Billy Bob Thorton. He plays either Karl Childers or the same wise ass as Tommy Norris.

If you think they always play the same character, you haven't seen their best work. They have mostly been 'phoning it in' the past 25 years or so, I'll give you that.

Been watching Stick on Apple. I am enjoying the show, not because of him though. He plays the same whiney asshole he always does

I agree, early in their careers, they were quite good in being able to play different characters. Travis Bickle, Vito Corleone, and Jake LaMotta- that is quite a diverse line up for De Niro, whose acting has become a parody of himself in the later part of his career.

But is seems the majority of movie stars/actors throughout history fit the "one character" premise of this thread, they simply can't deviate from their physical looks and traits, voice, mannerisms, etc. As mentioned, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, both made excellent films. But also Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, Jimmy Stewart, Spencer Tracy, guys who seem to mostly play themselves on screen.

I suppose you haven't seen Uncut Gems... He plays against his usual type in that, and it's by far his best acting.

Similar to Robin Williams' serious turns in One Hour Photo, or Insomnia. Or Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, or Dark Crimes.

And, Reign Over Me.

As for, "Playing themselves..."

Danny DeVito
Jack Nicholson
Dwayne Johnson
Jeff Goldblum
Forrest Whittaker
Denzel Washington
Jake Gyllenhaal

Not saying any the majority of them are poor actors, and I like most of them and they fit when cast for when that is the persona of the character needed, and once in a while, some "break character" and it's a pleasant change.

Will Farrell immediately came to mind. He's so repetitive that I can't find humor in his performances.

Adam Sandler has actually has demonstrated some decent chops in serious roles. In addition to the ones already mentioned, I thought he was great in Spanglish and in Hustle playing a scout for the 76ers.
