Peace through superior firepower |
Produced in 1942 during the German occupation of France, by the German-controlled Continental Films, directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot, this film- at first glance- appears to be a bit of silly fluff. Indeed, the film does contain comedic elements and if you look only at the first coupe of scenes, you would think that it's not worth your time, but it is. Clouzot was a master of misdirection, and you will think more than once that you have this murder mystery figured out, but not until the final scene will it all come together. Starring Pierre Fresnay and Suzie Delair (who lived until the age of 102), this film was intended by the Nazis to provide diversion and entertainment to the people of occupied France. There are American films of the same period which are similar to the pattern of the film, but make no mistake- this film is uniquely French. Airing overnight tonight, 4:30 AM Eastern. Really, if you're a film buff, do yourself a favor and take a look.

I keep seeing these recommendations by Para that tweak my interest. But TCM is only available as part of one of a couple streaming services and yes, I'm that guy, who refuses to embrace any of them preferring the likes of free services such as Tubi, Pluto, Fawesome, freevee, Filmrise, and plex among others. Occasionally I'll luck out and find the recommended film is available on one of them. Yeah I know, my choice, so my loss in many cases. Good movie, kept my interest, I enjoy older films. It moved along well with the characters and plot, not creating any dead spots. I appreciate getting notice of films like this.
