I remember when he started in Philly. I was doing research at a Philly center city medical center and the radio in the lab only got WMMR. That was almost 45 years ago and he was a radio mainstay ever since. I liked how every Thanksgiving day, he would repeatedly play Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant." End of an era sadly.

A huge loss for sure. Grew up listening to that guy every day while in middle school and high school. I've since moved on from listening regularly to WMMR but I know he was still there going strong every day for the midday show.

Back in 2000 I was at the TLA (Theater of the Living Arts) in Philly for a concert by the Jayhawks and local band Marah opened for them. It was pretty damn good and at one point I turned around and realized that Pierre Robert was standing basically right behind me the whole time. I just sort of nodded and he did the same back with that kind of grateful look that celebs will give when you just leave them alone and let them be a regular Joe trying to watch a band play.

I will be sure to cue up Alice's Restaurant at noon on Thanksgiving in honor of him as was his tradition for many years, he introduced me to that song and I always thought it was a hoot!

You can get anything you want, at Alice's Restaurant
You can get anything you want, at Alice's Restaurant
Walk right in it's around the back
Just a half a mile from the railroad track
You can get anything you want, at Alice's Restaurant

Saw this today, thought the PA/Philly locals here would like to hear about it

I have seen The Hooters like 5 times between the US and Germany and love them and it's my understanding that it was none other than Pierre Robert that put them on the map back in the early 80's:

WMMR-FM today announced Pierre Robert: A Show of Life, a concert to honor and celebrate the memory of the legendary radio personality, Pierre Robert, featuring performances by Brent & Zach of Shinedown; Lzzy & Joe of Halestorm; Ed Roland of Collective Soul; The Hooters and David Uosikkinen’s In the Pocket featuring The A’s, Beru Revue and Tommy Conwell, at The Fillmore in Philadelphia, PA, on Wednesday, December 17, 2025.

Tickets will go on sale on Friday, November 21 at 10 a.m. at TheFillmorePhilly.com.

A portion of the proceeds will support MANNA (Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance). MANNA uses nutrition to improve health for people with serious illnesses who need nourishment to heal. By providing medically tailored meals and nutrition education, we empower people to improve their health and quality of life. To learn more about MANNA, their mission, or to make a donation in honor of Pierre, visit them at mannapa.org.

“Pierre loved live music and enjoyed being among the good citizens of Philadelphia,” said Chuck Damico, Program Director, WMMR. “’The Pierre Robert: A Show of Life is a special event for all of us who cherished him, providing a fantastic night of live music and memories while honoring Pierre’s amazing life, and helping reduce food shortages in Philadelphia. We are incredibly grateful for the support from all of the artists and performers whom he called his friends, our friends at Live Nation and Cornerstone Management, and especially Pierre’s immediate family. We will sing, dance, and celebrate in the way Pierre would have wanted us to. Please join us if you can, and God bless Pierre Robert.”

The lineup is subject to change.

Pierre Robert, the genial and unmistakable midday host on Philadelphia’s 93.3 WMMR for more than four decades, passed away on October 29, 2025, at the age of 70. Robert’s voice was a daily ritual and a civic thread. His blend of kindness, musical knowledge, and enthusiasm shaped WMMR’s identity and the city’s rock community for more than 40 years. Colleagues and artists described him as a champion of musicians at every level, from stadium headliners to neighborhood bands.

He joined WMMR in 1981 after earlier work at KSAN in San Francisco. He became a fixture of Philadelphia radio for 44 years. Listeners knew him for his welcoming “Greetings, citizens” salutation and for a warm, steady presence that bridged generations of rock fans.

On air, Robert blended deep love of classic rock with curiosity about new music. Longtime segments included “Coffee Break Music Marathon,” “Work Force Blocks,” and “Pierre’s Vinyl Cut.” He was known for his annual Thanksgiving show, when he’d play Arlo Guthrie’s “Alice’s Restaurant” multiple times.

His community work extended beyond the studio. He supported local charity events like AIDS Walk Philly and MANNA’s Pie in the Sky fundraiser. He was inducted into the Philadelphia Music Alliance Walk of Fame in 2019, a nod to his lasting impact on the region’s music culture.

I used to see The Hooters and Robert Hazard at 23 East in Ardmore. Doesn't seem so long ago...
