Billy Joel, Summer Highland Falls

They say that these are not the best of times
But they're the only times I've ever known
And I believe there is a time for meditation in cathedrals of our own
Now I have seen that sad surrender in my lover's eyes
And I can only stand apart and sympathize
For we are always what our situations hand us
It's either sadness or euphoria

So, we'll argue and we'll compromise and realize that nothing's ever changed
For all our mutual experience, our separate conclusions are the same
Now we are forced to recognize our inhumanity
Our reason co-exists with our insanity
And though we choose between reality and madness
It's either sadness or euphoria

How thoughtlessly we dissipate our energies
Perhaps we don't fulfill each other's fantasies
And as we stand upon the ledges of our lives
With our respective similarities
It's either sadness or euphoria

Cinderella- Winds of Change

I walked alone through the blackest night
I felt the cold, I felt the bite
I took the high road but it ain't right
It's just the low road in disguise

“I used to be totally into Steve Vai and Joe Satriani and other shredders, and I tried to emulate what they did and really grow as a guitarist,” Mr. Hanneman said in “Louder Than Hell.” “Then I said, ‘I don’t think I’m that talented, but more important, I don’t care.’ ”

The Animals- When I Was Young

My faith was so much stronger then,
I believed in fellow men,
And I was so much older then.

My favorite Billy Joel song by far.

He wrote that while staying at the town of Highland Falls, NY just south of West Point, NY

James Blundt: Monsters
Oh, before they turn off all the lights
I won't read you your wrongs or your rights
The time has gone
I'll tell you goodnight, close the door
Tell you "I love you" once more
The time has gone, so here it is

[Chorus]
I'm not your son, you're not my father
We're just two grown men saying goodbye
No need to forgive, no need to forget
I know your mistakes and you know mine
And while you're sleeping, I'll try to make you proud
So, daddy, won't you just close your eyes?
Don't be afraid, it's my turn
To chase the monsters away

[Verse 2]
Oh, well I'll read a story to you
Only difference is this one is true
The time has gone
I folded your clothes on the chair
I hope you sleep well, don't be scared
The time has gone, so here it is

[Chorus]
I'm not your son, you're not my father
We're just two grown men saying goodbye
No need to forgive, no need to forget
I know your mistakes and you know mine
And while you're sleeping, I'll try to make you proud
So, daddy, won't you just close your eyes?
Don't be afraid, it's my turn
To chase the monsters away

[Bridge]
Sleep a lifetime
Yes and breathe a last word
You can feel my hand on your own
I will be the last one so I'll leave a light on
Let there be no darkness in your heart

[Chorus]
But I'm not your son, you're not my father
We're just two grown men saying goodbye
No need to forgive, no need to forget
I know your mistakes and you know mine
And while you're sleeping, I'll try to make you proud
So, daddy, won't you just close your eyes?
Don't be afraid, it's my turn
To chase the monsters away

At the time, James Blunt wrote this song for his father who had Stage Four Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and was awaiting an O+ donor.

The song was written and recorded without previous notice, and when it was completed, James played it for him in a room with just the two of them and having a positive response, saying: “That’s the way it is.”

James has gone onto say that the moment he and his father shared when listening to the song will stay with him forever as they never had a moment like that due to both having strict army backgrounds where the men have to be ‘tough.’

You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so you can fly away?
You gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way

I didn't originally like this song, but it grew on me.

Men fight for liberty and win it with hard knocks. Their children, brought up easy, let it slip away again, poor fools. And their grandchildren are once more slaves.
