I’ve watched a lot of it on Netflix with my daughters. (ANYTHING to bond with them)

Tonight we went to see it in Japanese with English sub titles…

It was great!

The writing and pacing was perfect. It’s no wonder to me why anime and manga are crushing American comics.

Since I watch reviews by The Critical Drinker on YouTube I’m a semi-proffessional movie critic

To recap- it was a well told story with plenty of hints of mystery to be discovered in the future.

I was far from the only dad there with kids. The best group was behind us which consisted of a dad, his daughter, and her friends. They were balling their eyes out! LMAO

I'm in a weird place with Anime. I like it, but I prefer anime with actual adult characters, because I hate the "magic kid saves the world" trope, which is probably over 90% of anime. I get it, most of it is for kids, but I was spoiled when I first started watching with Berserk and Cowboy Bebop.

Unfortunately, this show, and the movie, while wildly popular, is another "magic kid saves the world" show. I tried to watch it because of its popularity but just couldn't get into it.

Oh well. The new Ghost in the Shell season is ok at least, even if the transition to 3d animation doesn't look nearly as good as their older hand drawn stuff.

I can agree with this to some bit. Pretty much can’t go wrong with anything from Shinichiro Watanabe. Have to hunt more for things that have adult characters outside of that. Some things I’ve seen recently

Science Fell In Love, So I Tried To Prove It (I have an engineer background, this made me laugh)
Gangsta (which never got a second season)
Millionaire Detective: Balance Unlimited

That said, youth oriented things that are well done, good script, good vocal direction and execution, and a decent new hook of a storyline, I’ll give a shot. Demon Slayer is one. Gleipnir was certainly different.

But yeah, cutting teeth with things like Patlabor and Appleseed, sometimes recent trends just have to be waited out. I can always stream Trigun.
