"Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground" Hearing that song always takes me back ******************************************************** "we've gotta roll with the punches, learn to play all of our hunches Making the best of what ever comes our way Forget that blind ambition and learn to trust your intuition Plowing straight ahead come what may And theres a cowboy in the jungle" Jimmy Buffet

I was pretty near the front when I saw him in 1971 at the Chicago Coliseum. I was a senior in high school and took my girlfriend. Her older brother recommended the show. Pretty cool - just him and his guitar and a chair, but I think a band and Carole King came out later.

For some reason, I got up this morning with that song on my mind. It was so ubiquitous on the radio when I was growing up that I hardly noticed it. Then one dark night on a 3 hour road trip by myself it just sort of crept in and got me. Everyone has been in dire straits of some sort before, and this is some pretty good thinkin' music, for me anyway. I read today that JT wrote that at 20 yrs old after getting word of a friend dying. He also had a drug addiction he was trying to kick (unsuccessfully) at the time. That's what he's referring to about 'help me make a stand'. He did finally do it in the mid eighties and remains sober today to all accounts.

Ohhh, I've seen fire... and I've seen rain... "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

Won't you look down upon me, Jesus, You've got to help me make a stand. You've just got to see me through another day. ______________________________________________ Life is short. It’s shorter with the wrong gun…
