I started to try to find answers, then said screw it.. I'll ask here.

Does anyone know how the "Buy" option works? Are you buying a downloaded copy onto your device, or do you just have access to stream it whenever you choose?

Kind of.
I still buy disks (generally used for cheap) and rip them to files myself.

"Buying" is like a long-term rental. If Amazon loses the rights to stream the film, you no longer have access to it. And, if content is later edited, like if it's decided to remove some objectionable situations or dialogue, you won't have access to the non-edited material anymore.

Yeah I was looking to be able to watch something without internet, so it doesn't help me any.

You can download Amazon movies to view off line, so I suspect you can do that with purchased titles although I've never tried that as I've never purchase a movie from Prime.

I actually bought a movie from Amazon last week and just tried it to satisfy my own curiosity. You can download the purchases to watch offline just like other shows and movies that are included with Prime.

I have not bought many movies from Amazon but the few I have bought I’ve downloaded. I bought a cheap fire tablet a few years ago and use it to keep the movies on.

Another potential hiccup I heard (but have not confirmed): If you run afoul of Amazon and they terminate your account, you lose any content you may have “purchased”.

I have purchased a couple of movies and albums from Amazon and Apple, but still prefer to buy the actual DVDs and CDs.

If it is a movie or cd I want and like, I prefer to own the disc. When it is in my possesion it is the best video and audio I could own. Internet or not I like to own the disc.
