I've listened to Harry Connick Jr for probably 30 years, and my wife on a whim bought tickets to see his live show as it kicked off in town here.

Wowee zowee what a show. So much fun. I was really hoping for an original show with all of his humor and skill on the piano and other various instruments.

I wasn't disappointed in the slightest.

I love the guy, I'll admit I'm biased, but he really does have one foot solidly in the "showman" camp. There was a tap-dancer, lots of improvised interludes and bridges. Lots of New Orleans jazz. Lots of trumpet, sax, and trombone solos by his extremely excellent band. Tons of energy and tons of fun.

I also think, quite intentionally, he has his other foot solidly in a "Classic Americana" camp. If that's a thing. He had everyone singing "How Great Thou Art" at one point, which I think was a surprise to many, and even had everyone sing "Silent Night". It's more than just old gospel hymns or Christmas tunes. It's a reverence for the music of the eras, the musicians that forged so many paths, and the history behind the music and what it means to our culture. He doesn't care what people think about what he does, music-wise in his shows, and it... well, shows.

What an excellent show. I was especially surprised that he hauled out one throw-back (We Are In Love) from an album from the 80's that was one song I happened to know by heart and was singing along with. I was mostly expecting newer music and a lot of "ode to New Orleans" stuff, but it was a great mix of both.

At one point he even played a small clip of himself impersonating Louis Armstrong at age 9, which I'd never heard. (Hello Central, Give me Doctor Jazz) It was hilarious, and then he talked about it a bit and after, they played the song.

Great show. Well worth the time and cost. 10/10. Highly recommended.

Glad you enjoyed it! And I agree that he's worth seeing.

I've seen him in concert twice. The shows were fairly different from each other and he was excellent each time. I'd love to go see him again.
