I can’t just say, “Well, this is my favorite,” because the next John Prine song I hear will probably inspire the same thought.

Very personal song for John about the impending disintegration of his marriage to Rachel Peer-Prine, and that’s her playing bass and singing backup in this live perf.

Play this through headphones or a stereo or something, if you can.

I’m sorry to say Rachel is gone too. BTW, if you search pictures of Rachel, you’ll see that she wore her hair in a perm at times.

Back in the early 90s, I was driving down the road one day and heard Nanci Griffith's cover of that song. A good friend had given me her cassette Other Voices/Other Rooms. I remember thinking, as I was going through my own separation/divorce, "wow, what a great song...she nailed it". Then I heard Prine's voice and I realized it was his song. No wonder it hit me so powerfully. The man had a way with words.

One of my favorites is Souvenirs. Two best friends playing together. RIP Steve...and John. I hope you guys are playing together again. I saw John live a dozen times and he never failed to pay tribute to Steve Goodman at some point during his show. That is a good friend, even twenty plus years after his death.

And the classic, Lake Marie

I've never been a fella into celebrity worship at all, but the last time I saw John live was at the Chicago Theater. He was backed that night by his brother and I found myself talking with his brother after the concert when John walked up. I got the chance to shake his hand and tell him how much his music meant to me over the years. That was pretty cool...or at least I thought it was.

"We gotta go now".

I got turned on to John Prine in the late 70s and was able to see him a couple of times; once at the Park West theater in Chicago and another time in Milwaukee at SummerFest.

"Hello in There" is my favorite song of his.

^^^^ One of the first songs I learned to play when I bought my first guitar. Just two fingers and a couple of chords...
