Having been fairly off put with today’s cinematic selection, I am reminded of a few choices from the 90s — elicited a positive reaction in my opinion. Although I don’t recall them being as popular as say Armageddon or Forest Gump, I thought they were good story telling with thought provoking writing or endings that I didn’t see coming.…might have to go back and revisit them.

Dead Again is a 1991 neo-noir romantic thriller film directed by Kenneth Branagh and written by Scott Frank. It stars Branagh and Emma Thompson, with Andy García, Derek Jacobi, Hanna Schygulla, Wayne Knight, and Robin Williams appearing in supporting roles.

Last of the Dogmen is a 1995 American Western film written and directed by Tab Murphy (in his feature directorial debut). It stars Tom Berenger, Barbara Hershey, Kurtwood Smith and Steve Reevis.

Shattered is a 1991 American psychological thriller film written and directed by Wolfgang Petersen, based on the novel by Richard Neely. The film stars Tom Berenger, Greta Scacchi, Bob Hoskins, Joanne Whalley and Corbin Bernsen.

The Game is a 1997 American mystery thriller film directed by David Fincher, starring Michael Douglas, Sean Penn, Deborah Kara Unger and James Rebhorn and produced by Propaganda Films and PolyGram Filmed Entertainment. It tells the story of a wealthy investment banker who is given a mysterious birthday gift by his brother—participation in a game that integrates in strange ways with his everyday life. As the lines between the banker's real life and the game become more uncertain, hints of a larger conspiracy begin to unfold.

The Sixth Sense is a 1999 American psychological thriller film written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. It stars Bruce Willis as a child psychologist whose patient (Haley Joel Osment) claims he can see and talk to the dead.

My favorite movie of the '90s is Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures. That was where I first discovered my favorite actress of all time, Kate Winslet.

The '90s had it goin' on for unique filmmaking: Rushmore, Strange Days, Fearless (1993), Matinee, Face/Off, Kicking and Screaming (1995), Point Break, Hanabi/Fireworks, The Daytrippers, Zero Effect, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Freeway, Run Lola Run, Motorama, Chungking Express, Before Sunrise, et al. Heady days.

The Game is one of the coolest films I've ever seen and Fincher has a made a lot of great thrillers.

Great premise of this thread - there were so many "different" movies in the '90s that were so great.

I had forgotten about Zero Effect. Such a great movie. Brilliantly written. I wish there had been a sequel. I haven't seen the TV series.

The 90's was quite a unique period for movie making. Not only did the 80's era set a high-bar for entertainment value, but unique writing, storytelling and overall feel of solid movies were churned out in the 90's:

Pulp Fiction
Goodfellas
Silence of the Lambs

Really good quality films exploded from knowhere capturing audiences and their sense of storytelling:

Shawshank Redemption
Forest Gump
Unforgiven
Fargo

The 90's was a great era for movies and music where the above mentioned is just scratching the surface

The Matrix. This was from 1999.

first time I saw The Fifth Element it was on some cable channel, and I was home with some sickness, flu or similar,

I tried to watch it, stayed awake long enough to think it was horrible,

then later, once recovered from whatever ailment and w/ no medications in me,

it is one of out favorites, we watch is a couple times a year, and were fortunate to see it on the big screen a few years ago at a local indy theater
