He was in Chicago years ago. My team was assigned as security at the hotel. What a true gentleman and nice guy. He treated us as if we were best buddies and lifelong friends. I became a huge fan after meeting him.

What the hell? Without looking at the stats--I don't know--in his best seasons, did the Cy Young Award winner have better stats than Ryan?

As a little kid, as a die-hard Cubs fan, I hated Ryan. When he pitched with the Astros, they owned the Cubs.

Don't beat yourself up over this. Everyone owned the Cubs back then.

And wild pitches. I wish this weren't the case because I don't like the tarnish, but maybe it isn't. That can be attributed to longevity, although the documentary pointed out his early career wildness. I thought of this too: maybe his inaccuracy helped his strikeouts. If he was consistently over the plate, the hitters would have made contact more. With his very high velocity, and never knowing when he was going to throw his very-good curve ball, or change, the hitters were hopelessly guessing when one would be hittable over the plate, so the 5,714 strikeouts.

Hitters aren't nearly as likely to dig in when the guy throwing the ball at 100 mph plus is wild, or perceived as wild.

Watched it a couple weeks ago.
I loved it and always loved Nolan.
Gotta love a pitcher that isn't afraid to throw up and in to keep you honest.
The Ventura thing was just a bonus of entertainment. Smile

Funny I can remember watching this game as a kid. I wasn't a Yankee's fan, so I must have watched because Ryan was pitching. It made me hate Reggie even more. Big Grin

I watched it the other day it was very well done. I was fortunate enough to see him pitch a couple of times whenever the Astros came to town.

Thanks for the tip. As a huge (former) baseball fan and a guy who loves the game, I really enjoyed that documentary.

Ryan was and remains a true bad ass cowboy and was a hell of a pitcher and fierce competitor. Also had some class and humility, which most players today are incapable of, and that's why I am a former fan.

I still love the game and at 62 I manage a team and am the current commissioner of a Men's Senior Baseball League (MSBL) 40 year old and above wooden bat baseball league. I'll bet Nolan could still bring it in the 40+ division.

A true legend.

I'll watch this, having been a long time Ryan fan.

No Cy Young, which is too bad. He deserved it at least once or twice and got edged out. But he has all those other records. Seven no-hitters ain't nothing.

Phenominal show. Watched it twice.

Grew up as a young kid watching the Cubs on WGN, everyday. Loved Nolan Ryan. He scared me. Threw hard as hell, hit guys all the time, punched people out.

Magic times. Baseball isn't like that anymore to me for some reason. So many bigger than life characters back then.

Love the Pete Rose parts in it too.

I was working tv news in Houston then when the Astros signed Ryan. At the press conference, all I can really remember, and it's still vivid, is how beautiful Mrs. Ryan was. I locked the cam on Nolan and just stared at her.

Great documentary. I was a huge fan, saw him pitch at least 10 times during the TX Ranger years. I was at the 5,000 strikeout game.

I would have loved to sit behind the plate and watch him and/or Phil Niekro pitch.

Don’t know if you watched it yet, but one player (forget who) described the sound of an incoming Ryan fastball as sounding like “sizzling bacon.”
