Fighting the good fight |
We've had a few threads with folks frustrated about the stalemate between AT&T/HBO and Roku leading to being unable to watch HBO Max on Roku... Well, good news! They just announced that they have finally come to an agreement, and as of December 17th, the HBO Max app will be available on Roku devices. https://blog.roku.com/hbo-max Hopefully, this bodes well for the similar ongoing stalemate between HBO and Amazon for the Fire devices.

Well, there you go. Sounds like AT&T started being reasonable on both fronts. I don't have Fire devices, so I was just going by the threads over the past few months with people bitching about HBO Max not being on Fire devices. I suspect that AT&T/Warner/HBO is trying to play PR damage control. They were already catching a lot of flak for trying to milk more money out of Amazon/Roku from Fire/Roku-using HBO customers who were caught in the middle. And now they're experiencing some significant blowback from the movie industry over their decision to release all of their 2021 slate of movies on HBO Max the same day as in theaters, thus shafting all the moviemakers, whose contracts include a cut of the profits from theaters but not from streaming. (Plus, their movie industry partners apparently got no warning, and had to learn about it through the news like everyone else... That doesn't engender good business relationships to begin with.) AT&T/Warner/HBO management probably told their people to do what it takes to start putting out fires and generating some good publicity for a change, thus resulting in concessions that finally put an end to these two long-running stalemates. This message has been edited. Thanks for the heads up. I've been watching on my office PC, and casting from my iPhone. Although the iPhone casting works, it's somewhat of a PITA to launch. (anything more than two steps is a PITA to me) I'll be setting up the app on our three TV's this evening. Men fight for liberty and win it with hard knocks. Their children, brought up easy, let it slip away again, poor fools. And their grandchildren are once more slaves. -D.H. Lawrence

Yeah, I've been having to watch through the HBO Max app on my Xbox, which involves firing that up, digging out the controller to use, plus waiting for the controller to wake back up every time I want to make another selection or pause the current show. Watching it straight from my Roku like every other streaming service, using the Roku remote, is certainly going to be more convenient.

Oh, nice! If you had the old HBO app (pre-Max) on your Roku, it automatically updated to HBO Max.

Funny thing is that I recently, as in last week, canceled my subscription to Roku HBO and I still have it for another 3 weeks or so. My main reason for canceling was that I wasn't going to pay the same rate for HBO that was being charged for HBO Max elsewhere. I told them so in the "why are you leaving" box. Now I realize that my little comment had nothing to do with the negotiations that have been going on for close to a year, but dammit it's 2020 and I'm going to take credit for the win. I have the heart of a lion.......and a lifetime ban from the Toronto Zoo.- Unknown
