Yes, you can easily tell the difference. If you are going, definitely see it in IMAX. I love Nolan’s films but the fact that he does the IMAX means at home it’s full screen on the 4k disc. Fantastic viewing.

I think Oz was asking about the difference between IMAX film and IMAX digital.
I cannot speak to that but since Nolan was using no CGI maybe he wanted to use the film format instead of the digital one.

I don't know about "the average person", but to me, there is a significant difference. My primary revulsion with movie theaters nowadays is not the audience, the prices, etc., it is the projection technology. I dislike digital projection, IMO it doesn't even compare in quality to mechanical film projection. Just like many other things in life, people are more than willing to accept lower standards and grade for convenience and rapid delivery.
The last IMAX film presentation I saw was ironically Chris Nolan's Dunkirk, and it was amazing in that format. I took my son down to the front of the screen while the end credits were rolling and had him observe the slight vibration of the text on screen.

It also depends on which projector the theater uses. Dolby Cinema is digital only and it's amazing. Most IMAX films are shown in digital and look great because they're higher resoultion. The standard theater projectors? Not so much.

Saw it tonight. VERY disappointed. 5/10. Do not recommend.
Went into the theater with high hopes. I loved Fat Man & Little Boy (1989) and thought this would be a film about the Manhattan Project. The real focus was on Oppenheimer’s oppression for being a lefty. The last hour got very preachy. We get it. Nuclear war is a bad idea. I guess that was to be expected with Matt Damon as a star.
The best parts of the experience were the drunk girls dressed up as Barbie in the lobby and seeing the Dune 2 trailer on the big screen.
Oppenheimer is a bomb, not the bomb.

The three hour run time is enough for me to pass.

One of my sons saw it last night and said it was very good.
Another son bought advance tickets to see it in IMAX 70mm.

Friend just back from watching and wanted to pour-out his opinion to me...I think his wife is out of town visiting family so, I lucked out Sounds like both Matt Damon and Robert Downey Jr both end up playing themselves despite the fact they're supposed to portray real life people, so much for acting. Apparently Gary Oldman's portrayal of Truman is really good. Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh is in it, that might be enough to sway me to go sit down for 3-hrs. Nolan's music, like his other films, is beaten into you, there's no escaping the heavy mood music and tones.

Ah shit.
Well, thanks for saving me those few hours. I have a short window when I get home to do a few things and then fly out to meet my wife and kids. I was hoping to squeeze in some time to go to the theater for the first time in years. This is a bummer to hear.

Did it show him being a diagnosed violent psychotic? Him trying to poison his tutor? Him trying to strangle his friend because his friend was getting married?
How about him sleeping with a Russian spy?
How about his jubilation when the bomb was successfully deployed with his I am the destroyer of worlds statement?
They kept him on a tight leash for a reason. He was no hero, he was the weapon.

corsair, that was a fascinating look into Oppenheimer's personality. Tempting to think of him as another Elon Musk, probably Asperger's; moves on quickly from one thing to another (ADHD?)--but Musk manages it all better.

Well, if Gary Oldman is involved I just might have to reconsider.

We went today and really enjoyed it. Three hours long but kept our interest. I honestly did not know that much about Oppenheimer or the Los Alamos project beyond the basics and found it very interesting. Last year went through the Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas which also helped peak my curiosity more about Los Alamos. Been a fan of quite a few Christopher Nolan movies, though did not like Tenet, and were not let down with this one. We thought highly of the casting too. I don't like "woke" movies with an agenda and did not feel Oppenheimer was if that is a concern.
