Proper thread title: Das f*#king Boot

I am sure it's been discussed in these halls before, but it deserves a recurring mention.

My wife and I are finishing it up tonight. It's my fourth viewing; her third.

If you've never seen it: watch it.
If you've only seen it once: watch it again.
If you've seen it more than once, but it's been a while: watch it again.

What an incredible movie. Movies like this make almost every contemporary film look pretty stinkin' sorry.

The way I understand it, there are multiple cuts of the film, as well as a sort of TV miniseries.
I think my first viewing was on VHS, and I am honestly unsure what exact "version" or "cut" it was (though I know it wasn't the miniseries). My second viewing was a disc, but I am again unsure precisely what version (not miniseries). I bought my own copy after that second viewing. My third and fourth viewings have been the 210 minute, two-disc "Superbit" DVD that I purchased. I don't think I'll ever watch a different version than this one that I now own, as I am so overjoyed while viewing it, that I'd be nervous about trying something else.

I am sorry I sound like a lunatic. I am sure everyone who has seen the film will agree with my fanaticism.

***To anyone who hasn't seen it: I almost insist that you watch it in it's proper German, with subtitles. I think to do it any other way detracts from the enveloping experience. However, if you simply cannot do subtitles, it is better to watch it dubbed than to not watch it at all. It would be a shame to let a purist attitude discourage anyone.

Hmmm. I think it perhaps the most realistic war movie ever made. Which also makes it boring as hell for extended periods. I can’t imagine watching a loooonger version.

I do agree everyone should watch it. Watch it multiple times? We may part company there. I do like your viewing style though, if I read you correctly. This is a good movie to watch in bites.

I thought I read they filmed multiple endings or something like that.

The Standard for submarine movies. The rest are fighting for 2nd place.

I did do a search, before posting, and saw the thread mentioning the reboot; I felt this post had a different intent. The other linked thread is about someone shopping for a copy, which I actually participated in. In either case, neither thread set out to motivate folks to watch the movie, or discuss it. I don't think I am beating a dead horse here. And...

The amount of characters we waste discussing much lesser contemporary Hollywood drivel is somehow excusable, but God forbid we have another brief thread about a film like Das Boot.

It has always been the definition of dark irony in my book.

Yikes I thought this was about the movie Beerfest

Remember my first wiewing , when the movie was originally released. Therr was a small man carrying a leather briefcase and shuffling, struggling with a bunch of old documents. He argued loudly that one of the subs in the last scene had not been destroyed in the pen but sunk/lost at sea a few days later. He was quoting the U-boat number and shaking his documents as historical reference. This was Brussels, a lifetime or two ago.

I saw one of the extended cut versions where to illustrate one of those boring periods, two of the submariners were sitting across from each other literally flicking boogers at each other.

Great movie, its even better in German, all movies lose something when they are translated.

Not trying to derail the thread, but any fans of this movie (and I'm one of them) should consider coming to Chicago, go to The Museum of Science and Industry and visit the U505 exhibit. Touring a real UBoat and seeing how it operated, how the men lived on board and how we recovered it is an amazing experience.

It is amazing! And one of the most amazing parts about seeing it is when you actually, see it!

We actually wrapped it up last night. Shoooweeee; it's an awesome flick.

The only thing I'd recommend to someone who hasn't seen it is to break it into bits; probably three. 310 minutes is a long time to spend watching a film, and it'd be a shame for someone's opinion of the movie to be tainted due to fatigue.

It is a great movie. If you interested in subs check out this website: uboat.net

Of all the men in the WWII German submarine service, something like three quarters of them died. The fact that they were the enemy makes this no less appalling.

U-boat casualties were about 27500, what is appalling is that they killed 72000 in the Atlantic. Germany started that war and they killed an appalling number of people, including a huge number of non-combatants.
