Got on the list for a IOP SCAR 17. Got 10 mags already. Nightforce 1-8NX with larue mount. What other must haves? 13 in barrel? Trigger?

Thanks in advance.

Definitely a better trigger, unless they’ve improved them in recent years. I use the Geissele Super Scar in mine, but I see Timney now has one, but don’t have any experience with it.

For short barrels, unless you plan to run a can, a 13” 7.62 is going to be pretty loud and blasty, especially if you use a brake on the end.

Also, maybe look at replacing the picatinny rails. I like the PMM rails and extensions.

Cool as it is, I wouldn't bother with the short barrel. Aside from the tax stamp for it, you lose a whole lot of the energy of the 7.62x51mm.

I would, however, get rid of the muzzle break, if FN is still putting that monstrosity on these rifles. Opt instead for a standard flash hider. Lots of good choices. My SCAR 17 wears an AAC Blackout non-mount FH, which you won't be able to find new, I imagine.

FN's stock trigger is heavy and very creepy. Despite the fact that I am permanently pissed at Geissele for their bullshit COVID policies regarding their employees, they make what has to be the very best trigger for this rife, the Geissele Super SCAR. Perhaps these days there's an alternative, but this is a fantastic trigger.

The Parker Mountain Machine rear sling mount is a must have IMO.

For a front QD mount, I used Damage Inc's extended rail, though I think this is no longer available.

With those two items, you can get this kind of QD sling setup, here shown with my go-to sling choice, the Blue Force Gear VCAS.

The thing about the Damage Inc extended rail is that installing it requires that you remove the barrel, and there are torque specifications for the barrel which you must not ignore. For this, I used the Borka Tools PTL062. You will need this or some other precision torque wrench if you plan to remove your barrel. Torque specs for the SCAR 17 barrel can be found online, as well as the torquing sequence for the screws.

Trigger for sure. To me that's the only *must* have as the stock trigger was just so heavy. The rest are really preference on your use, but you'll likely end up doing a few other changes.

I use the rear stock loop and an HK hook for a sling, didn't end up buying any QD sockets.

I did, however, feel the need to change the safety levers. I'm not a fan of the large cylinder with a small stick coming off it, and I have Magpul ACR/SCAR long levers on both sides.

For the rails I ended up with Parker Mountain Machine (PMM) mlok side panels to replace the picatinny stock rails. I don't shoot my 17 much, if/when it gets into the rotation more I'll likely be pulling it apart and adding an extended rail of some kind.

PMM makes a lot of nice parts.

I'd also recommend a change in muzzle device, and if you suppress the gun you'll need to get more familiar with disassembly and servicing the gas system, and you'll need to get a new gas jet to reduce gas pressure for suppressed shooting.

Do not put a metal plate on the rear of the gun. Some of the stock kits, like the KDG kit to put an ACR stock on the SCAR, use a metal rear plate instead of the factory plastic, and the added shock will start to stretch the receiver around the rear bolts. Fine for the 16's, but the 17 can cause damage.

I was reading if you suppressed these it voided the warranty. Is that true?

I hadn't heard that, but when it comes to FNH-USA, nothing would surprise me.

Lots of good info here!

First thing is the Super Scar Trigger. I got my direct from them during a blemish sale and saved $100

I like the Impact Weapon Components sling mounts, PMM was going to be my second choice.

I added the Kinetic Development Group 6.5 MREX rail, and it was a game changer for me. It feels so much better, more comfortable/natural.

And yes, shooting suppressed voids the warranty according to FN

Change to the Geissele Super SCAR Trigger. I use the stock sling points and HK style hooks. I placed a Warcomp for the SOCOM Suppressor but did not change the gas jet. I placed the charging handle on the other side as my preference. I believe I have 6 mags for it and use a Haley D3CR-H chest rig for carry (inserts allow it to carry .556 as well).

Be sure to store earplugs and extra batteries under the buttstock.

A Geisselle trigger is the one absolute no brainer add on.

My second add on was a better grip. Not a critical no brainier though.

Add a fore grip to your preference.

I also added an extended forend extension on all my scars. I consider this a desirable but not totally necessary add on.

Post Pics of your Favorite setup!

I'm about as much of a scar addict as you will find.
The minimum is just get the Giessele trigger. The rest are not must have's.
On my guns to varying degrees I do the following.
Change the brake to a FH so I can use a suppressor on it. or just have a FH and not the silly brake.
Add the PMM QD mounts.
Add the PMM rail elimination (for me to get the diameter down primarily)
The rest all falls in the personal preference category.

That's a TangoDown grip, which I've since switched to a Magpul MOE+, modified by PMM, if I recall correctly. You may be aware that AR grips won't quite seat on the SCAR lower. They require a bit of material removed.

The TangoDown is a bit thin for my tastes, and the Magpul MOE+ is perfect.

**edit**

Yeah, here it is: PMM SCAR 16/17/20/SC Magpul MOE + Grip

I got the G trigger on sale for about $280 I think. Hard to ignore how good it really is. Not cheap though, on an already not cheap item.

Ditched the PWS brake also, for the 3 prong FN hider.

I'm back and forth about putting the 2.2 KDG rail on it. Lotta money and work, for a little gain. Deletes the pic rails for Mlok and extends under the gas block.

For me, a Magpul grip up front helps a lot, and I'd like to replace the pistol grip with the Magpul one PMM offers, just lazy about doing it.

After that it's all about the optic, which you have nailed sounds like.

I like the 16 inch barrel and LPVO for mine and what I want it to do. I have always wanted a 2nd 17 with the 13 inch barrel and a red dot, and while I'm dreaming how about Full Auto on there as well. Cool
