Buy high and sell "low" |
I have a Colt 6940 (monolithic upper) with the Matec metal sights on it, I changed out the Aimpoint for a Steiner P4Xi and when it is mounted to the rear it hits the rear sight. As shown in the pics, I moved it forward and it clears the rear sight, but I prefer it closer to my eye, so SIG Forum Braintrust should I leave it forward or take off the rear sight and try a Magpul sight or??? I have not fired it, I just mounted it tonight the mount is an Aero Precision Thanks,This message has been edited. Last edited by: archerman, Archerman

My money would be on buying a higher mount for clearance, or move metal sights to an "45°" mount position.

The scope won't be very usable in that forward position. Red dots optics work fine when mounted that far forward, but scopes have limited eye relief, and have to be mounted closer to the shooter's eye. (With it mounted in that forward position, it might be usable at 1x, but most likely won't be usable at 4x.) So you'll need to either replace the scope mount with a taller one (not ideal), replace the rear sight with a lower profile sight, or ditch the rear sight altogether. You could go with a set of offset sights, but you'd ideally want a longer handguard and no existing front sight base if going with those. As it is, you'd have to mount the offset front sight on the top of that short carbine handguard, resulting in a rather short sight radius, and that existing front sight would just be pointless.

Ditch it. Or install and offset rail for the iron sight.

I was thinking of just removing the rear sight as well, but I thought I would see if there were any other options, and at 1x the crosshairs are fine, but like i said I have not fired it yet. Thanks, Archerman

I'd just remove the rear BUIS. Not really needed IMO with a quality optic. “People have to really suffer before they can risk doing what they love.” –Chuck Palahnuik Be harder to kill: https://preparefit.ck.page

This...even with a rear site that cleared the scope while folded (or a higher mount)...unless it's some type of QD mount it will still take a tool (Torx or Allen wrench) and time to remove it to use the flip up sight... Those Aero scope mounts are light aren't they ...I like mine. ******************************************************** "we've gotta roll with the punches, learn to play all of our hunches Making the best of what ever comes our way Forget that blind ambition and learn to trust your intuition Plowing straight ahead come what may And theres a cowboy in the jungle" Jimmy Buffet

Is the backup sight usable even with the scope mounted forward? Backups are more important if the primary sight is subject to losing its reticle through an electrical failure or the battery’s dying. A conventional scopesight with a mechanical reticle will be usable unless the sight is destroyed, and then a backup that requires looking through the scope may not be usable either. I have an LE6940 with conventional scope sight and don’t have any sort of BUIS, and if your backup wouldn’t be or isn’t usable, I would just remove it. ► 6.4/93.6 ___________ “We are Americans …. Take it off, put it and the tools required to put it back on in a bag and store with the gun. Ready when you need it. r

Since you're kind of stuck with the front iron sight unless you reconfigure the gas block, I'd be inclined to just leave the rear sight on there covered by the ocular. If you want to use it, you'll have to remove the scope of course and although that's not practical in a battle situation it's still an option. Or take it off and save a few oz of weight. Although it would work, I think the 45 degree BUIS set up would look odd along side of your front sight/gas block. Men fight for liberty and win it with hard knocks. Their children, brought up easy, let it slip away again, poor fools. And their grandchildren are once more slaves. -D.H. Lawrence

Just move the BUIS forward. Yes, it is for emergencies but the chances are needing to use this insurance policy are small. If you need it, your are about one minute away from having it in place Or, you could practice with the BUIS forward.

That's not really a viable option. You'd end up having to mount the rear sight on the handguard just a few inches behind the front sight. That would result in a very short sight radius. More importantly, USGI-style rear peep sights are designed to be used with the aperture a few inches from the eye. Putting it a foot (or more) further forward would make is nearly unusable. Since either way you'd have to remove the optic to use these iron sights anyway, going with a lower profile rear sight that fits under the optic at the standard location at the rear of the receiver makes much more sense.

^^^^^^^ My mistake was speaking from my own experience. I have the magpul Gen 2 sights which work out perfectly with a Trijicon 1-4X. Thanks again.

When you say you're "speaking from your own experience", does that mean you have the Magpul rear sight mounted on the handguard in front of your Trijicon 1-4x, and you've used these iron sights successfully? Could you post some photos of this setup?

I just removed the Matech rear sight, and all is well. The rear sight was not usable with the Steiner mounted on it. And since the Aero Precision mount is not a quick release mount, I would have to remove the mounting screws with a tool anyway, so no sense in keeping it on there and having the scope mounted too far forward thanks for all of the replies. Method I use on skitreks where falls occur is simply to pack the carry handle in my survival kit. I store the carry handle and a small, flat stamped bicycle wrench for the in a GI cleaning kit pouch. All fits nicely. As others have said, a traditional scope is very tough. Mine have been subjected to all sorts of mayhem and tho I've had scopes fog and the tubes get dinged up and worn sliver in spots, I've never had a complete failure. On the other hand, here in Idaho I see a lot of broken front sights...and have had that happen to me as well, so I think it's a grand idea that you have that scope on there as backup to your irons!! ********************** 53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. For a quick emergency backup, such a position is intriguing. Using a ghost ring aperture, I'd like to try it. Can't be any worse a sight picture than that on a 1903 Springfield tho the sight radius would be very short. Having said that, at the very least, the sight could be stored in front of the scope and moved back to the rear position if the scope got mashed. ********************** 53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. I have more than 11k rounds through my ARs -- all carbines & rifles with optics. Other than the initial zeroing of the fold-down iron sights on one carbine, I've never used the irons. Never needed to, either. The Leupold, Nightforce, and Vortex scopes have functioned flawlessly -- never lost zero, always tracked well. My ARs have endured airline travel, training, and competition. They've been thrown in the back up truck beds, then buried by luggage and gear. They've been kicked over, fallen off the back of trucks while bouncing across fields, and dropped when sling attachments came undone. They've survived high winds in rain storms and dust storms. Like the Energizer Bunny, they keep going, and going, and going... You'll do fine.
