Ruger American Ranch in 300blk gets the job done. ( update w/ dinner pic) Login/Join

This is the 7th year that my son, brother and I have gone to this spot in Williston, FL. to hunt hogs. My son was 16 and my brother and I had just retired from the Navy after 24 years. Fast forward to today and my son is a young man of 23 and my brother and I have both put on some weight, him more than I…..lol.

Today was unusually warm even by Florida standards for December. It was a warm 81 degrees. The pigs were out and I had to decide what gun to hunt with. I had a new to me JM 357 Marlin with 158gr Hornady XTP’s I loaded up as well as a new RARR in 300blk with some 110gr VMax loads which were also loaded by me. I chose the 300blk and it did not let me down. This pig walked straight in looking down and gave me the perfect head shot. The 110gr VMax loaded with 19gr IMR 4227 dropped him like a load of bricks. The pressure from the bullet impact bulged both eyes and he was DRT.

My brother was looking for a small meat hog and shot one around 80lbs. It looks small next to him . All in all it was a great day with more great memories made by father ,son and brother.

Ham for Christmas dinner! Been considering the Ruger American in 7.62X39 but there may be a good chance cheap Russian ammo may no longer be available.

Do you know what the velocity is with that load?

And I'm curious what your scope is.

Great family fun. Congrats. Plus there is a couple less hogs running wild.

Hope they provide good eats for the coming new year

You guys all look great to me Wink

I remember your post a couple of years ago. I really like my ruger in 308.

Congrats on such an excellent hunt.

Nice. Hornady 110 Vmax works. Doing a public service in the wild, too.

You might consider the alias of "The Hoginator". Spoken with an Austrian accent, of course.

That is a compressed load from Hodgdon reloading manual. It is moving about 2100 fps out of my Ruger with 16” barrel.

The scope is a Leupold VXR Patrol Firedot 3-9x40. It is perfect on this rifle. I have it zeroed at 50yds, but the POA and POI at 100yds is the same. It is 2” low at 25yds and I need to come up 14 clicks to be dead on at 200yds. If you notice, I have that information on the card on the side of the stock.

You are being kind…..lol. I turn 51 in two months. The military kept me thin and I held the dad bod off until about 3 years ago when I started Nursing School for my BSN/RN. We graduate and take the NCLEX mid April.

Super nice, once dressed about how much are you getting from the meat hog?

Way to do it ( Wink ), and all sounds good.
Of course, as Lt Col Cooper used to say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating: I.e., it’s the results that count, and it doesn’t appear that those results could have been any better.

That place looks like a snake sanctuary; I wouldn’t get out of the truck.

Here in Georgia the state hunting regs advise wearing latex gloves when handling wild hogs. The hogs carry something harmful to humans.

How do you like that Ruger? I have thought of buying one for my grandkids.

I don't know much about powders and charge weights. Your ammo did the trick on the hog, but MV seems slow.

Using Hornady factory 110 Vmax on an 11.3" AR15 with a SOCOM mini can, I see 2347 fps MV.

What a wonderful family tradition!
Thanks for the pictorial report.

I d rather have to drag your brother's pig back to the road than yours. Razz

Looks like a lot of fun. Great pictures. Nice size hog. I have the same gun and love it. To me it has a great trigger right out of the box.

Nice hog, nice rifle! Looks very handy.

Do you own in Williston, go to a ranch, or hunt public?

A friend of mine has 225 acres near Groveland that I am determined to hunt, but I haven't made it out there yet.
