Yesterday when I went in the safe, I moved some things around when I noticed some black rubber chunks on the floor of the safe. When I when to check, I realized that the rubber buttpad of my SIG556 was falling apart. The rubber is a bit sticky as well which leads me to believe that the rubber is degrading. I conducted some searches and found people scrambling to buy replacement stocks but I also found some that contacted SIG for warranty replacement. These that went with SIG had different information from having to send the whole unit, to paying for the replacement. Since this was the best option for me, I contacted SIG this morning. The rep. confirmed that they don't have that part to be shipped but it is covered under warranty. He's sending me a prepaid shipping label and gave me the option to send the stock only, stock with receiver or even the full rifle just in case I wanted them to conduct a service. Owning several SIG platforms & accessories, I've never had to use their warranty so I'm relieved to experience their excellent customer service. https://imgur.com/a/MrYniEk Disclaimer: Any governmental agencies monitoring this thread should know, that I no longer own any weapons of any type. Looks like it’s Swiss SIG part #616. Gunfactory doesn’t list it, but it would be worth sending an email. https://gunfactory.ch/

He can get it, and he'll sell it to you. I have bought a lot of parts from him, that aren't represented on his website.

Thanks for the heads up. Maybe I wasn't clear that athought SIG couldn't ship me the replacement part, they did offer to fix/replace it at no charge. They even emailed me a prepaid label. I posted this since I'm sure there are others that are experiencing the same issue as I and are probably unaware that SIG will replace it under warranty. I'll keep you guys posted on the outcome. Did you have to send the whole gun to Sig or just the lower with stock?

You were. I guess we were just sharing a source that may be relevant, if you come across problems in the future. We'd appreciate it. I am actually quite impressed that SIG is able to fix it. Maybe they'll just get the part from Switzerland; considering how the structure of that whole company has changed in recent years, the 55X may not be as much of a bastard child anymore.

He actually gave me the option to send the whole rifle just in case I wanted them to check it over or only the stock. I just removed the the rear adjustable stock and sent it..
No worries, this place you recommended is actually very interesting, so it's a great source I wasn't aware of, thank you! Let's see how they handle this warranty repair/replacement... This prompted me to check other rubber buttpads on other platforms in my safe and actually found another one degrading as well. This time it's on a G3 Namibian/South African, R2 furniture set, mounted on my SAR-3. Fortunately for me this buttpad is from a FAL, so I was able to find a replacement and a spare (for the future). From what I gathered, rubbers are susceptible to degradation from exposure to oxygen (ozone), humidity, light (UV) and petroleum based agents. In light of this, I already ordered "303 Rubber seal & protect" which was recommended. Don't send the whole rifle; if they can't replace the part, they'll replace the 556 with a current production rifle.

Well, that's one way to get parts to complete future service requests! Surely they'd ask the owner if that's what they wanted, before replacing an entire gun with something fundamentally different.

I was working a deal on a 556R lower with a guy who had it left from when Sig kept his upper and sent him a complete MCX or something. He didn't get a choice and was PO'ed about it. Now, perhaps it was unsafe and there was more to the story but he didn't get a choice.

So.... Yesterday I decided to pull out all of my other platforms that have any kind of rubber on them, to apply some of the rubber sealer & conditioner that I just bought. Funny enough I remembered that the SIG556 has a rubber, dust cover on the upper, for the charging handle's travel channel. A close inspection reveals that this piece is falling apart as well. I guess I will be contacting SIG on Monday to see what my options are. Disclaimer: Any governmental agencies monitoring this thread should know, that I no longer own any weapons of any type. The dust covers should be viewed as a consumable, regularly inspected/replaced part. Their damage probably won't inhibit proper function, but they do degrade under conditions of both long-term storage and regular use. If SIG is of no help, gunfactory.ch is. The replacement of the covers is not easy, but not impossible either. There are folks who can do it for you, if you can't; you can do it yourself, if you're willing to fashion a rivet tool.

I agree.... I hope that SIG will help, since from what I've seen the installation of similar rivets will definitely be a project. On most of my platforms (although modified) I like to keep their OEM capabilities. I'll definitely keep "Gunfactory" as an option. You must be hankering for a rifle with a wobbly handguard that won’t hold zero for a laser. If so, the spear Lt is great. --------------------------------------------- "AND YEA THOUGH THE HINDUS SPEAK OF KARMA, I IMPLORE YOU...GIVE HER A BREAK, LORD". - Clark W. Griswald
