I have a Scar17, M1a, ptr91, Armalite ar10. I choose the scar. I might be tempted by a Larue and I also like the looks of the Ruger SFAR.

My first 308 semi-auto was a Stoner SR-25 Match, I kept it for about 15 or so years, most of the time it sat in the safe, not that it was a safe queen, it was just boring to shoot our range only goes out to 300yards. To shoot further I had to either go to a friend’s farm or drive 1.5 hours to Salina’s 1,000yd range.
Sold it, it just didn’t make sense for me. After that I had a myriad of 308 semi-autos starting with it was still early in the 308 AR game and the selection was pretty thin. I picked up a DPMS LR-308, to scratch the occasional itch. 24” stainless fluted barrel, JP Enterprise trigger, adjustable gas block, bla, bla, bla, tried building a load for it but nothing came close to the SR-25. After several other 308 semi’s including a genuine HK91, Belgian FN FAL, a plain Jane M1A but I didn’t like the fit.
Finally SiG introduced their 1st gen 716, I picked one up and it did speak to me, its heavy and still not an SR-25 but it was 1/3 the price and accuracy is almost as good as the ST-25. It also spends its time in the safe and it’s probably been 5 years since I’ve shot it as my shoulders are “shot” … but I might be able to shoot it, it’s heavy and I can can put my suppressor on it, so maybe the recoil wouldn’t be too bad.
I’ve had a SCAR16 which I didn’t like but haven’t owned the 17. As expensive as they are I don’t expect I’d like it … that may be a self fulfilling prophecy but at my age I’m probably done buying firearms.

If you really want something you'll find a way ...
... if you don't you'll find an excuse.

I'm really not a "kid" anymore ... but I haven't grown up yet either Wink

I voted the SCAR 17, I own multiple SCARs including two 17's. I agree with you on the chunky feeling of the SCAR in it's stock form. It bothered me enough that I developed my own aftermarket SCAR forends for the sole purpose of bringing it up to modern standards for decreased weight and improved ergonomics.

Obviously I'm biased, but I believe this completely transforms the SCAR shooting experience. It no longer feels like you are holding a brick or a 2x4. If you want to give your SCAR another chance with a fresh forend update shoot me an email and I can get you taken care of: support@regosys.com

As for running suppressed, I've been shooting my black 17S pictured below suppressed for 12 years and have never had any issue with it. As mentioned by hrc the ability to tune the SCAR with easily changeable gas jets is an incredible feature that keeps the SCAR running smoothly. This is especially important in .308 where ammo power and suppressor back pressure can vary dramatically.

Shot this the other day at 100 yards with iron sights. Customer rifle that I re-barrelled and bedded into a McMillan. Just sayin'...
