Picked up a really nice Walther Model 1 semi auto/bolt action rifle for a great price. Most I've seen are overpriced and possibly broken. I ran 2 boxes of Norma Tac-22 through it Sunday. Had some dud rounds [Norma seems to be hit and miss depending on the lot #]. Had problems in semi auto, only got 2 shots in a row out of 50 rounds. Didn't effect function in bolt action. I hope it's not the mag, they cost more the I paid for the rifle! I think it might be an ammo issue. I know high velocity ammo will break the rifle, the Norma is within spec. Would subsonic ammo be a better choice? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Yidn, shreibt un fershreibt" "The Nazis entered this war under the rather childish delusion that they were going to bomb everyone else, and nobody was going to bomb them. I would give CCI Standard Velocity a go in it. If you have issues then I would say the gun/magazine it the issue. I presumed you cleaned it super well. I have a Marlin that gums up something wicked on occasion and the action just needs a really good soaking. The rest of the time it runs like a top. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. I cleaned the barrel & bolt head. Bought an owner's manual which hasn't arrived yet. Only manual I could find online is in Italian [Beretta sold these as Olympia rifles postwar]. I'll try shooting with some RWS Rifle 22lr I have laying around after I clean it more thoroughly. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Yidn, shreibt un fershreibt" "The Nazis entered this war under the rather childish delusion that they were going to bomb everyone else, and nobody was going to bomb them. My first step would be a complete disassembly and cleaning. It's probably just dirty. It would be cheap enough to try another ammo as well.

Update: After field stripping, cleaning & lubing, I have concluded the rifle is extremely ammo sensitive. I ran 2 boxes of RWS Rifle through it with better but not perfect results. It did the best with 3 rounds in the mag. I tried 5 rounds of Eley Club, all five failed to go off. I'm thinking the firing pin spring is weak. Just ordered some CCI SV, we'll see how it goes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Yidn, shreibt un fershreibt" "The Nazis entered this war under the rather childish delusion that they were going to bomb everyone else, and nobody was going to bomb them. Final Update: Same duds with CCI SV. I'm convinced it's the firing pin spring. Anyone know who sells them? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Yidn, shreibt un fershreibt" "The Nazis entered this war under the rather childish delusion that they were going to bomb everyone else, and nobody was going to bomb them. I think I would call the Wolff gun spring folks. They can probably make a new spring for you. End of Earth: 2 Miles Upper Peninsula: 4 Miles

Prepared for the Worst, Providing the Best |
Wolff also sells spring stock variety packs that you can cut to fit. I bought some a while back and it has been super handy to have on hand with older guns when you have to replace a spring that you can't just go out and buy. And it also pays for itself pretty fast when you don't have to pay crazy prices and shipping for individual one-off springs. I hope you can it running. That looks like an interesting rifle. Can you describe how the whole bolt-action/semi-auto things works?

Bolt handle in up position, semi auto. Bolt handle in down position, bolt action. Only use standard velocity ammo, HV can knock the bolt handle off the bolt, it's brazed on. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Yidn, shreibt un fershreibt" "The Nazis entered this war under the rather childish delusion that they were going to bomb everyone else, and nobody was going to bomb them. half-genius, half-wit |
I've had one of these for my entire life - my dad bought it in Cork Ireland in 1930. I learned to shoot with it, first as a single-shot b/a, then as a repeater b/a with the bolt, and then, when I became more able, with the semi-auto feature. Mine, BTW, is a second model with a five-figure serial number. A few pointers - a few years back mine began to misfire and give light strikes, too. So I had a pal in the US send me a replacement spring from Numrich. It made no difference. Seems it was a dud batch of .22. I put the old spring back and all was well with regular ammunition. It looks to me like the bolt head has been welded back on at some time - like mine. Mine happened last year when I got given a box of mixed .22 to dispose of on the range. All it took was two shots with Mini-Mags and the head flew off. Stick to regular velocity stuff. Ten minutes with a TIG welder was all it took to fix. Easy tell for model - Model 1 has a slimmer barrel, and a shotgun-style safety. No provision for upgraded rear sights. Model 2 has a heavier profile barrel, Mauser-style flag safety and two holes drilled and tapped in the tang - where the older shotgun-style safety is located - to take proprietary peep sight - a VERY rare item that I've never seen. However, pal Raul Braudo in BA has one. Now, magazines. Sure, they are NOT cheap, but I have found a source of new five and ten round mags. Don't be put off by the UK address - the mags are made in RSA and are of VERY high quality - I have two tens - https://riflemags.co.uk/walthe...lzMkwcZ0vBl0dteIh57y These are around £55. If you want me to get one for you I'm sure we can arrange something. email me for pics of of mine, with my dad's old x2.5 scope on it. He got injured while blowing up a RIC police station in 1920 and his right eye wasn't too good for many years....This message has been edited. Last edited by: tacfoley,
