I just wanted to give a report on how the LW ICR barrel performed today.

This was the rifle I was shooting, minus the cheek riser, since risers aren't allowed on the M14 for Vintage Sniper.

Since it's the off-season, they don't shoot 300 and 600. Instead, they shoot two sets at 600 yards. I thought the second relay would have their own sighter time but was mistaken. I didn't realize that the guys not shooting were actually just spectators.

I coached my teammate and got him 9 and 10 ring and then he shot his relay. I was surprised when the second relay was up and there was no second relay sighting time! I just had time to get my rifle on the line, get the scope caps off and open my box of ammo and the relay began! The end result is that I shot high score at 600 for the first string! 98-6X! Cool First shot was in the 10-ring and the second shot was in the X! Dropped two points on shots 3 & 4 but finished with the rest being 10's and X's.

I shot this rifle at 600 yards 10 days ago and hadn't even cleaned it. Had enough ammo from that batch to finish.

Second relay was okay but I clustered a bunch of rounds in the 9-ring, despite holding a little high left. Dropped 6 points on the second string... Mad I guess the wind wasn't as prominent during the second string as it was during the first string. We did have a left to right wind from the target to 200 yards. Gusts were intermittent.

All in all, I'm very happy with how this barrel performed. Someone on the second string beat me by one point with a low x-count. I shot second highest score for the day.

Velocities at the target were very good and my SD's were in the single digits!

The load was 42.0 grains of RL-15 in LC LR cases, 175 grain SMK seated at 2.815". Brass was wet tumbled and bullets were coated with Hornady One-Shot dry case lube prior to seating to prevent the copper and brass from cold-welding when seating. This keeps my SD's low.

Tony.

Congratulations, and sometimes it’s best if we don’t have a lot of time to prepare for (and think about) a competition in advance. Wink

Vintage sniper match sounds fun. Sorry for the thread drift but what defines a rifle to make it vintage? Is it age or just certain models of rifles that are allowed?

There are a lot of rifles allowed from 1953 and earlier in category A and 1954 to 1976 in category B.

Categories will include rifles used around the world like the 6.5 Swede, Enfields, Springfield 03, Winchester model 70, Japanese type 99, Wood stocked M40's, Mosin Nagant, G3, M1C, M1D, etc….

Scope types vary dependent on what was used on different rifles.

Yeah, it looks like it's going to get a lot more fun for me! My 14 year old son said he wants to be my teammate for the next match! We'll just share the rifle.

He's shot 600 yards a few times already. Mostly with bolt guns, but he did really well the last time we shot. he was stacking them in the 10 and X-ring on a F-class target with a Remington 700 in 223AI.

Good shooting. It's nice to see that bullets still fly further than 50 yards. It's nice to see some quantifiable results, especially in competition.

New rifle threads too often go like this...

>>> Check out my new rifle. It's purdy. I'll give a glowing report on its amazing accuracy shortly, once I get a chance to shoot it.
(crickets)
--- Have you shot it yet?

--- Have you shot it yet? Let's see some results.

>>> I added some camo tape to the stock. It's really purdy now.

Where's the Like button?

Lookit my new gun, ain't it great?
I'll get to shoot it three weeks from next Thursday.

A friend shoots Vintage Sniper with an 03-A4.

I set up a .223 for F class and while it wouldn't shoot with a .308 at 1000, no matter what the catalog said the BC was, it would hammer at 600.
