I have long wondered how my Springfield Armory, Inc., with <6000 serial number that I purchased in 1978 ranked on the desirability scale. Is it reasonable to assume that it has mostly GI parts?
Yes, it should have all GI parts. It should have been made between 1976 to 1977.
Is it a standard M1A or was it match conditioned? If it was match conditioned, it would have been done by Glenn Nelson.

gearhoundsWell, here it is. An older lady friend of Mrs Gear whose son had passed away several years ago leaving behind a sizable gun collection asked for some help in preparing to move them to a family member. The direct family has picked them over but it seemed there were no interested parties for the M14. I cleared and assessed each gun, made recommendations on general values, and loaded them into her trunk.
She asked if I was interested in any of them and, well, here we are. I made a fair offer which she promptly refused countering with a ridiculously SUBSTANTIAL reduction. I was floored, all things considered. She wanted to show her appreciation adding that it would probably be either sold or put in a safe forever.

I looked at several online Armscorp M14’s but none had what appears to be the plastic stock on the rifle. Apparently, there is an Archangel chassis that comes with it, but the original woodie is nowhere to be found. The paint scheme appears to my eye to be an approximation of the old M40 of yore. This makes sense as the original owner was retired military before he passed.
The scope sits very high-high enough that proper cheek weld is difficult. I think I can drop the scope with lower rings and still able to use the open sights.
It’s warming up and I’m looking forward to getting out and trying this thing on for size.

RogueJSKMost scoped M14s use a cheek riser.
They run the gamut from nice leather risers laced on the stock, to kydex risers bolted on, to nylon risers strapped on, to chunks of foam taped on.

I’ll probably look into the former before doing the latter haha!

M1GarandyTo my eye, your stock looks like one of those that SA Inc was using that appeared to be painted with something similar to truck bedliner when they were new that has had a camo paint job applied to it.

gearhoundsThat is how I would describe this finish. Looking through the open breech, you can see the inside of the stock which looks like black plastic.

benny6You can get the scope lower, but you still need a Bradley cheek rest. I recommend the adjustable version. I have a few of them on various rifles.
Your stock may be a take-off SAI refinished GI "krinkle" stock. SAI filled the selector cutouts and painted a black krinkle paint on them. They are good stocks, if it's the one I'm thinking of.
But if it's really flimsy, then it's a newer synthetic SAI stock.
Nice score!

gearhounds^^^
It’s definitely a plastic stick; when you look through gaps, you can see the black where no spray paint was sprayed. I can’t say it feels “flimsy” but I don’t have a strong frame of reference to compare to. The folding butt plate was replaced with a rubber one and I assume this is the one you describe as there are no markings on it that I can find.
What’s the consensus on the archangel stock that came with this beastie? I suspect purists don’t like it (I do think the factory look is leaner and less chunky looking), but is it a good chassis?

benny6The archangel is similar to the plastic stock. It's a high density plastic and it's oversized. I'm not a fan.
If you want light and rigid, go with AG composites. It's carbon fiber, but also about $900.

gearhoundsThanks- since it wasn’t the one mounted at the time, I suspected there was a logical reason.
