Almost a year ago, in a thread about a Remington 1100, I mentioned a Syracuse Arms double-barrel shotgun I got to look at.

I got another [brief] look at it this morning, while the owner asked me to help learn more about it.

It’s a beautiful gun, really. It needs some more cleaning, though, and I’d love to get some of the rust off of it.

Anyway, the key question today was, “is it 10-gauge?”

Lacking any 10-gauge shells to use for test-fit, I figured I’d just measure the chamber and see what I could learn. I got about 3-1/4” from the barrel opening to a step or shoulder inside the barrel, and a diameter (at the open end) of .845”. I know a 10-gauge shell is .775” or so…. Figuring there’s maybe a bit of taper there to make loading easier, it makes sense that it’d be a 10. At least, it makes sense to me. Am I on the right path here?

And to answer the obvious question, no, there aren’t any markings on it other than “Syracuse Arms Co." on one barrel and “Improved Damascus” on the other. There’s another stamp which I assume (I know) might be a serial number.

Have you removed the front hand guard?
Sometimes additional markings on the barrels reside there.

I'm not sure how to remove that... but I'll look when I can get my hands on that gun again. Thank you for the tip.

.845 would indicate an 8-bore, not a 10-bore. Is it a smooth or rifled barrel? I presume it is a hammer gun.

Thank you, YJ. I was wondering if it could be an 8-bore, but nothing in the reading I did last night (I'll post a link to that info this evening) mentions Syracuse Arms making an 8.

There are no exposed hammers. I believe I took pics of it when I had it at the house a year or so ago; I'll look for them and share.

Stealing a pic from the web, it looks like this:

[Edited. Holy smokes, that pic is huge.]

Look here for the pic: https://image.invaluable.com/h...5206426_original.jpg

(I snicker a little at that tag: "Modern firearm." This gun has to be more than a hundred years old.

I missed posting the link last night, but this thread at another forum (post 25) brings a LOT of information.

Did you measure the barrel dia at the muzzle? That would give the best indication of gauge. If you’re measuring at the breech face there may be a step for the rim of the shell and then another step at the forcing cone down to the barrel diameter.

So it’s probably just a 10 ga after all.

I should have thought to measure the muzzle, and I did not. Thank you for pointing that out.

I’ll visit again in a few weeks and will do some more measuring.
