Loading from the front (Volcanic / late 1840's and Henry / 1860) as well as tube fed from the stock side (Spencer / 1860). Side loading gate didn't show up until the 1866 Yellowboy.
"Member" The Ball repeating carbine had a loading port/ejection port before the Yellowboy. (slightly earlier)

Member The Winchester 1866 was the first model to use the King’s patent side loading gate. The original Henry rifles loaded from the front of the mag tube.
