I picked up the rifle from a member a few days ago. It came with a Magpul P-Mag 30 AR/M4 Gen M2, more available from Magpul for $12.99. I've been out of the rifle game fo many years, never owned an AR and I'm wondering about spare mags. Any recommendations if I want to save a few bucks? GrabAGun was selling another type of P-Mag acouple days ago for $7.99, and I'm wondering if there's a quality, fit or reliability issue with the cheaper mags. -------------------------- Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats. -- H L Mencken I always prefer reality when I can figure out what it is. -- JALLEN 10/18/18

I prefer alum. GI mags myself. If not those. I prefer Lancers. Not saying anything is wrong with the Magpuls. They are good too. As far as price and cheap. I would rather have 5 mags I liked and fully felt comfortable with, than ten that cost the same as the five. "Practice like you want to play in the game"

I like MagPul mags, but if you are going to leave them loaded keep a dust cover on them. The feed lips can start to split over time. I also have a ton of GI mags left over from my days in the Marines and even the oldest beat up bastards work like champs. The only new ones I own are Okay Industries Surefeed and I have no complaints. Like all GI mags I only load 28.This message has been edited. From what I have seen, Okay mags are $10/mag when bought in bulk of 10 mags and Magpul gen 2 can be had for $95 for 10 mags. Many retailers sell them this way, you just have to figure out what you want. Most of my mags are Magpul while I have about 20 Okay aluminum mags. The nice thing about the polymer mags, is that when you drop them accidentally, the feed lips or bodies don't get dented or damaged. I have had quite a few Magpul mags loaded for years now and have been fortunate not to have any broken feed lips. Not to say it can't happen but mags are cheap and things happen.

They're out of stock, but these guys keep finding another pallet of 30 rd Okay mags. Get on their notification list and check email often. https://www.bigtexordnance.com...ract-magazine-packs/ 20 rd mags ARE in stock: https://www.bigtexordnance.com...-magazine-5-56-20rd/

Loading GI mags to 28 has not been something I worry about. But being 28 or thirty in either GI or Magpul would not worry me one way or the other. Do your own trials to decide. DH mags are good. So are Brownells. GI mags from Colt, Center, Okay, are all gtg. Should be able to find in the $10 range. Don't delay. Get what you need at a good price while available. Buy a few 20 rd while at it. It’s easier to seat a mag with 28 rounds in it on a closed bolt. I’ve accidentally loaded 30 before and not had any problems but I’ve been loading 28 since the Marines taught me to and have been doing so ever since. “Everybody wants a Sig in the sheets but a Glock on the streets.” -bionic218 04-02-2014

I remember there were FTF issues with the 30-rd mags in 'Nam but I thought they were corrected. -------------------------- Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats. -- H L Mencken I always prefer reality when I can figure out what it is. -- JALLEN 10/18/18

The new anti tilt followers solved those early feed issues years ago. I have magpuls qnd gi aluminum mags, the magpul do fine but the gi mags are better. If I have a feed problem its either the gas setting or the magpuls but its rare and usually with steel ammo. First In Last Out

I like Okay (also branded as Surefeed) aluminum 30 rounders, Lancer 20 and 30 rounders. Magpul second generation 30 rounders and Magpul third generation 20 and 30 rounders. Palmetto 30 round aluminum magazines are made by D&H, formerly known as Labelle and these are fine magazines, though IMO, the Okay/Surefeed mags are a bit nicer- the feedlips aren't as sharp. The Palmetto/D&H mags will cut your thumb if you do enough loading of these mags without using a loader. And I am in the 28-rounds-only camp.

Signed up for their waitlist just now. I may buy a couple Magpuls just-in-case, then a 10-pack of these when available. I'll check with Greg for the Magpuls, since I also need a couple G-19 mags. Still open to suggestions. BTW, who's got a basic sling? -------------------------- Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats. -- H L Mencken I always prefer reality when I can figure out what it is. -- JALLEN 10/18/18

https://magpul.com/ms1-sling.html?mp_global_color=118 These used to be about ten bucks cheaper. I use Vickers slings on all my rifles. https://www.blueforcegear.com/vickers-sling They used to be twenty bucks cheaper, but everyone has lost their damn mind. The Magpul sling is adjustable and well-made and will work just fine for you, but if you have the money to invest, the Vickers sling is nicer.

That rug really tied the room together. |
Magpul gen 2 are range mags. Magpul gen 3 are the finest AR15 mag available. Okay aluminum is the best metal magazine. Magpul changed their polymer many times over the years. They no longer need the feed lip protectors to prevent the lips from separating. ______________________________________________________ Often times a very small man can cast a very large shadow

Para, thanks for the sling leads, but even at $35 I'll hold off. Things are tight, I'm fighting health issues, and I'll have to rank a sling third, aftr ammo and mags. Somehow I convinced myself that a simple sling would be around $10, silly me!!! -------------------------- Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats. -- H L Mencken I always prefer reality when I can figure out what it is. -- JALLEN 10/18/18

I think the gen 2 Pmags are perfectly fine. Magpul continues to manufacture them for use in rifles which will not accept the gen 3 mags. I certainly wouldn't characterize them as range-only magazines.

Get my pies outta the oven! |
I bought a Ruger AR-556 back before Christmas and caught a Black Friday deal on the Gen 2 Magpul 30 round magazines. They seem well made to me, the rifle came with one Gen 2 and I bought a bunch more. My only experience so far has been with GI aluminum mags from shooting the M-16 in the military but I've heard only good things about Magpul polymer magazines and how they are becoming a favorite with military forces both US and allies. That's good enough for me.
