Got my rifle last week, just finished teardown, cleaning, and inspection. I am VERY pleased.

Early "I" cut stock.

Correct "thumbnail" front sight and correct rear.

Early flat bolt. Bright, clean metal on receiver.

All internals are correct Winchester, no bayo lug, and a bright-shiny bore.

Serial puts it to 1942.

I'm still looking for a new production carbine, but they're real scarce. These two sources don't seem to be making very many:

If you don't mind doing a build, and you can find one, the Springfield Armory Inc. M1 Carbine receivers were VERY nice. Last made about 20 years ago, but there are still some out there to be had.

They're spendy, but Fulton makes them.

Interesting reading the first link about the M1 carbine with the picture showing a stamp in Redmond, WA that is not far from me. Interesting.

My Quality Hardware re-parkereized and -sprung mixmaster M1 carbine was my first "long firearm" and is just so much fun to shoot.

I've been going to big and little gunshows for years and I'm amazed to see nice quality M1 carbines selling for prices at or even above good quality M1 Garands.

That's because Garands are still readily available through the CMP. The CMP's Garand sales are holding down the price of Garands on the secondary market.

There's nothing holding down the price of Carbines.

When I was in Coast Guard Boot camp I was a member of the rifle drill team where we used the M1 Garand with fixed bayonets. Worked my ass off to the bone being in this unit but looking back am so proud that I did.

During this time I fell in love with the Garand and to this day still want one. I still remember not getting "M1 thumb".

I thought the CMP program was long gone.

Just wondering.

Not at all. It's still going strong.

Here's the page with details on Garand sales: https://thecmp.org/sales-and-service/m1-garand/

Don't let all the "Sold Outs" scare you. They haven't run out, they're currently just behind in unpacking/grading rifles, so they've temporarily halted mail order sales of most Garands. They only have Field Grades available for mail order currently. But they still have other grades available in the CMP Stores in Ohio and Alabama, and mail orders for higher grades will resume at some point in the future.

This happens from time to time. They have plenty of rifles sitting in the warehouse, but often lack sufficient manpower of qualified volunteer workers to help unpack/inspect/grade rifles to keep up with demand. So every few years, they put mail orders on temporary hiatus until they can build back up their stockpile of ready-to-ship rifles.

The COVID-related spike in gun demand, and quarantine-related shutdowns and restrictions on in-person work, have simply exacerbated this routine occurrence.
