Pretty cool how forward-thinking CONARC was at the time to put these requirements out at the same time the M14 was being adopted.

I like the charging handle in the carry handle concept. Easy to access, protected, ambi by design. But you can poke yourself in the face with the back of it that comes out of the upper.

This was carried over from the original AR-10 design.

There are a few other rifles that utilize a similar style of charging handle or a more modernized lower profile version, including the FAMAS, VHS, or G36K.

I like that Ian correctly credited Fremont and Sullivan for their part in the design of the AR-15. Those who know a little on the subject will say with confidence that Eugene Stoner designed the AR-15.

Well, yes and no. As Ian pointed out, it wasn't simply a matter of scaling down the AR-10.

The video was a great history lesson and a great example of the AR.

Stupid old fun fact.. The original GI Joe with the Kung Fu grip had the model of the m16 with the charging handle in side the carry handle. I know because I remember thinking what a pain it was to get the GI Joe's rubber index finger through the little area for the carrying pose! Was one of my favorite toys and I was very sad when the glued-on hair started falling out in patches making him look like he had a serious illness..

Other favorite toy was Evil Kneivel on a motorcycle with the wind up base it would shoot out of and roll away.
