Hello guys,

I have finally settled on a rifle / optic combination as my GP rifle. The rifle is a home build using the following components.

Aero Upper, lower, Rail
Aero lower parts kit
BA LW S/S Hanson barrel
Toolcraft BCG
Breech Warhammer CH
Larue MBT
MAGPUL stock and pistol grip
Leupold 1.5 - 4 Green Firedot SPR on ADM mount. (VERY lightweight. Replaced a heavy Trijicon TA11)
Troy BUIS
Streamlight Protac rail mount light

The goal was to have a LW GP rifle with good combat accuracy out to 200yds. I’m not looking for a rifle capable of stacking round on round on top each other. This one is shooting 3 round groups under an inch using 75gr Speer LE boanded SP. I have killed several hogs with this bullet, so I am pretty sure it would do equally as well on two legged types if needed.

The rifle has perfectly acceptable accuracy at 200ys with the low power scope as well. Head shots were pretty easy. I was able to keep 5 of 6 shots on a 3” dot which was completely covered by the SPR at that distance.

I have fired roughly 1k rounds through this weapon w/o a single malfunction. She made a trip with the family and I to the country this weekend. I felt good knowing my GP rifle was with me out there deep in the woods…lol.

This rifle is my favorite of all the guns I have built. It looks sharp, shoots well and is easy to carry due to the LW barrel.

What are you guys running….and feel free to let me know what you would change.

I still employ a two-optic approach. My typical optic is an Elcan Specter DR 1/4x. I swap to an Eotech for use with night vision, or in contexts where CQB performance is the priority.

These are two past threads touching on the general purpose carbine optic topic.

Is that 16” ? Nice set up. The Green is cool

If I had to grab a rifle out of the safe at a moments notice it would be my 11.5 colt. Iron sights and I’m good to hit my range’s 125 yard 8” steel plates. My only issue with 16 and longer is sticking a suppressor on there starts making it front heavy.

I’m starting to dig 13.7 as best of both worlds (16.1 with muzzle device) so I don’t have worry about state lines ( I live very close to Alabama border so 11.5 not a great full time truck gun). May end up with a SOLGW 13.7 and stick a 1-4 or 1-6 on it.

Those are some very nice groups you got.

The setup I have that’s the closest to your GP rifle is a Wilson Combat Protector S. The scope is an SAI 6, 1-6×24mm. It’s no lightweight, partially because of the Magpul stock, but it’s what I conceived of as being suitable for a “designated marksman” role to a couple of hundred yards or so. It’s not the gun and optic I’d choose if I were drafted into a posse to clear a school building, but it would serve if necessary.

A 10-round 50 yard group fired with Speer 75 grain Gold Dot Soft Point.

This group was fired at 200 yards with IMI 77 grain OTM ammunition. I’m not sure what caused the high “flyer,” but a maximum of 6 power magnification makes eliminating aiming errors at longer distances difficult. That particular load at the time I fired the group would often produce similar groups: several shots in a nice cluster and one out in the weeds, so that was a possibility as well.

I have a Primary Arms 3x Prism on mine and really like it. I plan on getting a 1x prism and recently got a great deal on a P.A. magnifier and flip to side mount.

I have a number of specialized ARs for specific purposes, but this is the closest to a General Purpose AR. It's my "jack of all trades budget build", a 16" lightweight midlength 5.56 sporting an Aimpoint PRO and 3x flip-to-side magnifier. Built partly off the "FrankenAR" that forum member 12131 Karma'd to me last year.

I guess this other one qualifies as a GP rifle as well. My latest acquisition, a 16" POF Revolution .308 with a 1-6x LPVO. Not the best at any one role, but adequate at anything from home defense (with a light added), to hunting North American game out to a few hundred yards, to plinking steel out to 600.

My general purpose short range gun runs an aimpoint.
MY the 'only thing I can have for everything forever in SHTF' needs to go longer than that and runs an ATACR 1-8 like MikeGLI.

My favorite GP rifle wears a lot of different optics. Today it has a Aimpoint T2 in a Unity mount. Couple of weeks ago it had a EoTech EXPS 3. If I want to throw a LVPO on it it’s either a SIG Tango or Vortex Razor 1x10. I change out stocks on occasion. It has a Magpul BAD lever.

The rifle is a Springfield lower that I wore out the upper. So I put a 14.5 BCM MCMR upper on. It has a 3 prong SF muzzle device and I either run a RC3 or RC2 on.

The gun is an awesome shooter. When the barrel goes on this one, I’m probably going to replace it will a Cobalt Kinetics 13.7.

It’s actually my favorite rifle.

My most "general purpose" rifle is a 16" AR with a SIG Romeo-5 RDS. I wavered between the Romeo-5 and a LPVO for a long time and eventually picked up a used SIG Tango MSR 1-6. For a real general purpose rifle I think the LPVO is a better option, but I put it "someplace safe" and now I can't find the damn thing.

My other rifle, a DMR/SPR sort of thing, is a 20" heavy Krieger barreled beast with a Nightforce NXS 5-22 on it.
