Last week at the range 2 young Navy guys were shooting next to me. I only shoot iron site pistols. I kept hearing the plinking of the metal target they were shooting so I looked over. They were shooting S&W M&P 15-22s. We started talking and I inquired about what they were shooting and if they liked it. They let me try it. Bad mistake on my part. It was really fun to shoot. I found myself at academy sports today and convinced myself I needed to buy a Savage 64 Precision. It was only $299 so….I bought it. I will use this just to plink at the range. Probably 25-50 yards. It has no iron on it so I need a red dot or scope. I have never been interested in either or rifles. Advice on red dot or scope is sought.

You might want a rimfire or airgun scope with a fixed oradjustable parallax down to your shorter ranges.

pyramydair.com has a large inventory of such and some good educational info.

https://www.pyramydair.com/optics/scopes

Another specific recommendation is the Burris Droptine 4.5-14X 42MM, with adj. parallax down to 50 yards.

Thanks. Good info there.

Ok, I did a lot of research and ended up buying a $29 CVLife scope off Amazon. What’s incredible is that the scope is actually pretty good. The gun is crap though. It misfeeds and jams on every single round. It never fired more than 1x without misfeeding. After much research it’s a well known issue. I know better than to buy a cheap gun. Argh. I emailed Savage to see what they say. I have a 1943 Savage Arms tube feeding .22 rifle. I bought it for $25 at a gun show in 1992. That thing is deadly accurate and has never had an issue. It’s why I took a shot on this rifle. Shame on Savage for not recalling these from the dealers.

True, but you should have done some research prior to buying the rifle. You asked for recommendations on a plinker rifle a year ago. Nobody said "Savage 64". Cut your losses and sell the rifle.

I’m going to tinker with it and see if it’s fixable. I don’t sell my guns so I’m stuck with it. It’s so bad I couldn’t in good faith sell it to someone even if I did want to.

Savage built a turd -- you can't polish it. It makes no sense to keep anything that doesn't function as intended. Sell your turd back to the dealer who sold it to you in the first place. If someone else buys it, it's not your problem. It's just someone else who doesn't do their research in advance.

Selling a firearm isn't like dumping a family member. Guns are just tools. If the tool doesn't work, it should go. No different than a defective drill, wrench, or saw.

That’s too bad. I knew nothing about the rifle before today when I checked the Savage site, but it has features of other guns that are very popular for precision (or semi-) shooting these days. Research is always a good idea, but if that hadn’t been possible and I wanted an inexpensive rifle with those features I might have fallen into the same trap. Thanks for the report.

I do, however, agree with not keeping something like that. It would drive me crazy to know it was taking up space and yet was utterly worthless. If the dealer wouldn’t buy it back at any price, I’d just give it to him or anyone else who might want to fool with it.

Surprisingly I received my rifle back from Savage Arms today. My magazine was not in the box but 2 other smaller ones were. As was a certified note from a gunsmith stating the weapon now works. I put 6 rounds in the new magazine and they chambered fine. I will shoot it this weekend and see what happens. I’m not sure why they sent the smaller capacity magazines but if they work, it’s fine. Kudos to them for the fast service.

I took the rifle out last Sat after remounting the $29 Amazon scope. I put 400 rounds through it with one jam. The scope was on target right out of the box to 50 yards. The rifle is awkward to put magazines in it. Poor design. It was fun to shoot and easily the quietest gun I have fired. I hope it stays that way. It’s a pretty inexpensive range toy. Both my son and I were pleasantly surprised by the whole setup.

Glad to hear your rifle is functioning better. Hopefully it continues to do so.
