I have a 870 that i bought years ago but never cleaned or fired until now. I field stripped, cleaned and lubed, function checked before going to my range. The first four sheets feed and fire fine, but last shell in the magazine jams and does not feed. I thought maybe I was short stroking the last round, maybe trying to go too fast, but it happened every time. Tried loading just one shell into the magazine and making sure I was fully working the pump but it would not feed. I don't have 12 gauge snap caps and don't want to be trying to figure it out racking live shells in my garage. Any thoughts or suggestions before i go off to the gunsmith?

That would be my first suggestion. Rom 13:4 If you do evil, be afraid. For he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is God's minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.

One thing I always do when buying a new or used pump shotgun is to clean the magazine tube. I have cleaned a lot of crud out of them, even the new ones have leftover grease or oil in them. I agree with the other posters that it is probably the spring. But if you replace the spring, I would give the tube a good cleaning.

I learned this just a few weeks ago -- clean the crud outta the magazine tube (even on a new gun) first thing. God bless America.

A standard 870 tube should only hold hold 4 rounds. Maybe your spring is worn out an will load more than 4.

I anticipated suggestions to change the magazine spring but didn't want to pre load the responses. That and the suggestions to clean the tube, I don't remember if I did that before firing but probably not. I was under the impression that the basic model magazine capacity was 5 2 3/4 inch shells but a quick google search shows it could be 5 o4 4. I need to go back to the manual and check this. Appreciate the help from all.

I don't know what this is. The standard 870 holds four 2.75" shells unless you have a magazine extension on it. I'm amazed that you got five in there, which speaks to your probable need to replace the spring. ______________________________________________ Carthago delenda est

That's mostly correct. But there are factory 870s without separate magazine extensions that do hold more than 4 shells, the "Tactical" line, which are distinguishable by the longer magazine tube protruding ahead of the pump and the guide ring on the 18.5" barrel being located just behind the front sight instead of ~1/3 of the way down the barrel at the end of the pump:

That's a standard 4 round 870 with what appears to be the OEM +2 magazine extension added. So it should hold 6x 2.75" shells in the magazine (4+2) in that configuration. Your magazine spring is likely either worn out, or a magazine extension was installed but not the accompanying extended magazine spring. Start with getting a new magazine spring, and ensure that it's a +2 extended magazine spring, not the standard spring for the basic non-extended 4 round magazine. Something like this, selecting "2 Round" from the dropdown list: https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1933655289 Then while you have the extension off to swap in the new magazine spring, give the magazine tube and extension a good cleaning with a 12 gauge bore mop.

Yeah, this. I had the same thing happen a year ago during a class I was taking. My 870 started jamming on the last round in the tube. The round only came about halfway out of the tube, not far enough for the carrier to be able to raise it up to the chamber. It turned out there was a buildup of some kind of crud or grease or plastic residue on the inside of the tube, about an inch into it, and it was preventing the follower (under decreased spring pressure because it was the last round) from traveling all the way to the rear. I gave it a good cleaning with solvent, then installed a new spring and stainless steel follower. It's been working great ever since.

Also someone could have added the extension at home and did not fully remove the dimple in the factory tube. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. I don't remember where or when I bought the gun (I could look at the receipt in my file but i am not home for another week) but I am reasonably sure I bought it new in a LGS. I did not add the extension to the tube, it came that way. But I guess its still possible a dimple in the tube might be there, I'll have to check for that as well.

Possible, but if the dimple hadn't been removed then you most likely wouldn't have been able to get the 5th shell into the magazine in the first place. And if it came from the factory with the extension, it wouldn't have had a dimple to begin with. It's worth checking when you clean your magazine tube, though.

so just to wrap this all up. No dimples in the tube. cleaned out the tube and extension thoroughly with solvent. It was kind of dirty but not not terrible. ran a bunch of patches until came out clean. Went outside, loaded one shell, racked the pump and IT WORKED!! fed and ejected flawlessly. Did this multiple times. Don't think I need to replace the spring. Thanks again to all for the help.

I'm glad it worked! Take a look at Wilson Combat, Vang Comp and Wolff springs. ***IF*** it goes pbffftt on you again, think about replacing the spring and possibly the follower. ______________________________________________________________________ "When its time to shoot, shoot. I advise replacing the spring anyways. Cant' hurt and will add peace of mind. I changed all mine a couple of years ago when I overhauled a couple of 870's. Tony. Owner, TonyBen, LLC, Type-07 FFL www.tonybenm14.com (Site under construction). e-mail: tonyben@tonybenm14.com
