I've put several together, and have less than $700 apiece in them. Whatever lower receiver I can find, usually Anderson or PSA. LaRue triggers in every one of them. Reasonably priced and I like the feel. The uppers and optics is where I can go off the rails on a budget build. Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago.

Or you could buy two of the sub $1k rifles and have different configurations, like barrel length, furniture, optics, etc. Same money spent, twice the fun. No one's life, liberty or property is safe while the legislature is in session.- Mark Twain

Every thing he said! Needs vs Wants. I can grab a good AR off the shelf for $1000. Toss on a RDS/LVPO for another $800. Sling, mags, maybe a light- another $500. And Im happy with that. I can use it for work, play and home defense. Or I can drop $4000 on just the gun… Or I can drop $400 on just the gun. Im worried about banging up the $4000 gun, Im worried about the $400 gun not going “bang”. Do you really NEED a $3K LMT MARS? Or do you have the cash and just WANT one? ______________________________________________________________________ "When its time to shoot, shoot. I agree on not needing to spend $2k. But if I had that kind of a budget on one rifle I would look at the LWRC DI. I also like Noveske but not sure how that company is being run now. I would also look at LaRue but same question as Noveske. Same for Geissele. Maybe buy an FN and an AR-10 for that $2k Best of luck. "Practice like you want to play in the game"

I'm a DIY at home builder. Some of my builds are on Anderson lowers, but I accrue parts over time and spend on barrel, bolt & trigger. I don't keep track of $ spent on purpose, I don't want to know what they cost. I broke my pattern and dropped $3k on a complete Noveske Afghan yesterday, that hurt to see the total spend all at once. It better turn out to be a good shooter! The complete rifles I am attracted to the most are Geissele Super Duty, but I've never shot one. Colt 6920 I’ve seen them sub $1000 on sale. Or piece it together. BCM gunfighter or Colt complete lower with stock can be had for $500ish. A LMT lower is $800 On their website, A BCM upper 14.5 or 16 can be had for $700 ish. They throw in a BCG and wil pin and weld an A2 muzzle device for free. A surefire or huxwork muzzle device is another $150. A GI charging handle is $30 a radian is $100. An LMT /SOLGW/ Daniel upper is 700-1500 depending. You can put together a really good rifle for 1200 exactly how you want itThis message has been edited. Last edited by: ElToro,

^^^^ This is what I would do. Get whatever decent lower you like and then get the best upper you can afford. The magic is in the upper.

A man should own a minimum of two self-loading centerfire rifles in business calibers- .223/5.56mm, 7.62x39, et cetera, and they should be of the same type and caliber and accept the same magazines. In the United States, the AR-15 is the obvious choice for many reasons- ubiquity, a broad selection from 400 dollars on up, an uncountable number of configurations, magazines and spare parts all over the place, an impressive knowledge base for troubleshooting, and on and on. You must have at least two of these rifles. Even discounting the fact that a second AR-15 is a force multiplier for a man with a family, owning just one such rifle is a gamble. We're not talking about a plinker or a gun for Cowboy Action Shooting or whatever; we're talking about the most effective means of self-defense for the citizen. If you are being harassed by a gang and you shoot one or more of them, and the police take your rifle as evidence, you're in a real pickle if the gang wants a second party. If your rifle suffers a disabling or catastrophic failure, you are without this primary means of self-defense until such time as you can effect repairs or replace the rifle. These are just two of the scenarios in which a second rifle is indispensable. I say with all sincerity that I mean no offense when I point out that a man asking such a broad question as 'what do you like for AR-15s' is no connoisseur of the AR, and that he would be best served by two 600 dollar AR-15s rather than one 1200 dollar AR-15. Buy a pair of S&W M&Ps or mid-grade PSAs. Stick with iron sights to start; optics can come later. Buy at least twenty PMags. Get a decent adjustable sling for each rifle, such as the Magpul MS-1, 40 bucks retail. Choose inexpensive lights to mount on each rifle- there are many choices, including ring mounts which allow you to use standard flashlights with 1" diameter bodies. Try to obtain vital spare parts, including a complete bolt carrier group, or, at least the bolt head, firing pin, cam pin, firing pin retaining pin, gas rings and the like. A smooth-running AR is like good sex: clean or dirty, it's gotta be wet. Learn the necessary lubrication points for your rifles. Invest in quality lube and grease. I recommend SLIP 2000 products- EWL and EWL30 lubes and EWG grease. These lubes and grease can be mixed to obtain a desired viscosity which will remain in place on the rails of your bolt carrier, so that this critical area of your rifle will stay wet for months at a time. I cannot overstate the importance of sufficient and persistent lubrication for the AR. Get a decent transport case that you can toss into your vehicle. Last but certainly not least, invest in quality ammunition- M193 55 grain will do what you need without breaking the bank, including penetrating some types of body armor. My favorite is Federal and I have stacked it deep but the Biden administration decided it shouldn't be sold to you. You can buy the Winchester version, some of which is made in the very same Lake City plant as the Federal. You can also obtain Israeli IMI M193. Two is one, one is none Mazel tov!

need the like button for this post, been an AR guy for a long time, built my first on a Sendra receiver in 1984 or so, when Dad handed me the lower for my birthday and said go build it, back then choices were A1 or a CAR, so I went A1 and then converted it pre May 19 1986 to a MG, stil have it, with a spare 14.5 and 11.5 inch upper, and it has about 8 cousins, 3 of which are Match rifles a couple of M4 wanna bees, and a few inbetween all do what they are intended, none except 2 are high dollar, one sports a Frank White Krieger barrel A2 upper, the other a modern A2 by Geiselle, both are much more accurate that I am, FWIW, if you have doubts on what some folks consider rifles for poors, as in the Freedom or similar PSA, a friend bought some, and put them thru the paces at Quantico search the AR or sniper section on gunboards, the poster is milprileb, he is a fixture on the 1000 yrd line, and if Skip can make them work, he will tell you , and preach it, https://chandlersfirearms.com/chesterfield-armament/

And that’s a beautiful thing. I wish I’d have went this route in the beginning. My current work gun is an old DD lower, Geissele trigger, year old BCM upper, Surefire light, and SIG Tango6. My favorite personal gun is a Saint lower with 14.5 BCM upper, Surefire light and ACOG with a top mount RMR. Life is good. ________________ People hate you. Train like it.

I have run nothing but PSA hybrid builds, but I have to say the Daniel Defense DDM4v7 is really nice. I paid around $1400 for it with the upgraded furniture. Upgraded to the 3 gun trigger, some Midwest BUS, and an optic is all you need. Even the stock trigger is nicer than milspec. The PSA lower with the enhanced trigger is a great way to start. They go on sale frequently. It is about as good as it gets for the $. The trigger is pretty darn good. "Practice like you want to play in the game"

I decided to go with two, a basic FN with open sights and a Geissele Mod 1 with a 1-6 LPVO for a higher end piece. No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

I just bought a 1-8 LPVO. Never had more than a 1-4 so I’m interested to mount it and try it out. I think your combo fits pretty much everything. Solid choices. My AR’s are LWRCi DI, DD, and a random assortment of stuff I’ve gotten over the years. The LWRCi and DD are my go to stuff. Never had a complaint about either brand other than they are proud of themselves.
