Classified as a fully compliant firearm by the BATFE, the new 14" barrel Mossberg 590 Shockwave pump-action 12-gauge does not require a tax stamp for transfers. With an overall length of 26.37" and cylinder bore barrel, the Shockwave provides a 5+1 round capacity using 2 3/4" shotgun shells. Installing an inexpensive aftermarket rubber feed gate attachment allows this 590 to reliably feed Aguila Mini Shells, for a total capacity of nine rounds. Thanks to the fore-end handstrap and the angle of the Shockwave Raptor birdshead grip, recoil is much easier to manage than one might expect. Other features include a matte blue finish, bead front sight, top-mounted safety switch and an easy clean-out tube magazine cap. MSRP: Approx. $450

Watch the video as American Rifleman's Joe Kurtenbach fires the gun at SHOT Show's 2017 Media Day at the Range.

Anyone have thoughts or opinions on this new Mossberg?

I like it for middle finger to the BATF aspect and have a wait list spot but I'm not sure if I'll make the purchase. In practical terms a stocked 18" model is more useful.

I think it's asking for more trouble than it's worth.

yeah i would not leave the house with mine, a local sheriffs deputy was in the store while there selling them and said that he would arrest someone if they had one in there possession even if they had the paperwork from shockwave. so its a little concerning. the gun store i purchased mine from said they would give me complete trade in value if anything were to ever come up on the atf changing there minds like they so often do.

This will confuse local law enforcement, I'm sure. It would be a shame if you presented the shockwave letter and ATF approval to local LE and they arrested anyways. Sounds like at least a good reason to get paid.

The price is right.

And the size of it makes it attractive for some applications.

Choices are nice.

I have had one on preorder for months now. Since they are in stores I'm sure they are waiting for prices/demand to drop before shipping.

I hope that deputy gets some retraining before he makes a bad arrest. He's going to end up costing the county a lot of money if he's acting on his personal opinions.

That's what I'm thinking. Do reduced recoil shells help?

That's my issue, I don't think it is. Less gun is more money?

A letter from the BATF won't get you out of a state law, and there are a lot of states that have an 18" minimum shotgun barrel law on the books.

I have a few SIGs.

I'm thinking the store wouldn't be selling it if it wasn't legal in that jurisdiction.

Luckily this is a firearm, not a shotgun. So their silly rules are circumvented. That deputy needs to educate himself. Our job is to enforce the laws on the books not our personal beliefs. Think something's illegal all you want. If there's no code section backing you up get ready for de-arrest and possible admin/legal punitive action along with civil problems.

How difficult is it to hit a B-27 target with it at typical home defense distances?

Gimmick.

Buy a standard pump with a stock and be done with it without the potential headaches or misinterpreations by Law Enforcement.

My FFL showed me his Shockwave. I could see a place for it along with my Nova. My house is small, so it looks like it would work great for me.

So a smart purchase would be a body cam with this gun....for the ensuing lawsuit?
