I start to feel naked if I have less than 1k rounds of a given caliber on hand. This one will be put through its paces.

The Mp5 is a relic. A thing of the past. I'm kinda surprised you can find so many people talking trash about it. Oh no, you can't put all kinds of garbage on it. How much do you really need? I've never liked the claw mounts, but they do the job. You can get rails and such for the handguard.

It's been years since I had the pleasure of the vanilla version and the K in full auto. These weapons, as far as I'm concerned, are ergonomically perfect. Even without the paddle, you'll figure out the mag change. They are "heavy," but not really, it makes recoil nothing.

The Mp5 has one flaw. It gets dirty quickly. The reality though, is that if you manage to have a stoppage during combat, that engagement has been going on a while. When I say quickly, we're talking over 500rnds or so. Quickly for a machinegun perhaps.

That's about it for roller delayed blowback. For the other option, see my DOE thread. Less accuracy than the Mp5, far more reliability. Folks seem to have trouble getting them to run, but that's for another thread.

Man, you're gone for months and months and then you pop up with a 9mm DOE Colt, the 9mm AUG and then now this. Ugh, the green monster of jealously the stomping all over my heart.

Great gun!

The Mp5 clone is the only thing to happen recently, and it was years to gather and get around to, same with the DOE. The AUG and other stuff I have yet to post all were well spread out. It does seem like a lot all at once, but I've been pacing myself in reality.

That is very sexy and hot looking firearm Arc. I have to get a towel to wipe my mouth. Still dreaming of owning one like that. I was making $6 an hour back in early 90 (before the 94 AWB). I frequently visited a fun store in Burbank, CA around 90 or 91 staring at an HK SP89 and IMI UZI. Wanted it, but can't afford it. Still kicking myself in the rear for just not opening a credit card to purchase them.

Very, very nice.

Very nice, Arc. I picked up an Orion MP5 a few years back as an anniversary gift from my wife. It rounded out my collection of firearms I had cards for back when I was in.

The MP5 was always my favorite, I compare it to Porsche... not always practical, but absolute fun when used correctly. In full form, it was the most controllable auto I've ever shot. Controlled groups while moving was never a problem with it.

In the semi version, it fills the void, gives me the familiar feeling when I pick it up.

I wouldn't sell it for any price now.

I shall respect you until you open your mouth, from that point on, you must earn it yourself.

Yep. A MP5 with 3 round burst trigger pack is the only centerfire auto I've ever shot whose recoil could accurately be described as "negligible".

I always wanted an MP5 type carbine after shooting the SD model in the Army, but never found the justification for the price...or opportunity. I bought a PTR 9C around Christmas for a few hundred less than wholesale and totally love it. I would have paid more after shooting it again.
When I shot it "back to back" with the CZ Scorpion and AR 9mm platform the roller block action recoil difference is obvious. None of them are high recoil by any means, but that HK design is like a 22lr in comparison to the other 9mm.

Uuuugh! That's it! I've been on the fence for getting an MP5 clone, but I think it's going to be my next gun purchase. They are just too much fun and very comfy to shoot. I've been looking at Century, Zenith, PTR, and others.

Any thoughts between these various brands? Arc, did you go with this unit because of opportunity, or did you down-select from other brands? (please delete if you think this is too much of a thread hijack)

I'm leaning towards a shorty (ZF-5P, 9KT, AP5-P, etc.) version, with a folding/collapsible stock, and using a suppressor. I'm a bit less of a PTR fan, since the top rail appears welded on. I don't give a damn about the HK logo, I just want a quality piece of hardware.

FUN!

I got a ptr because it was in my hands. You know how people are endlessly discussing which is the best AR brand, but really they're all good and it's down to preference? We're about there with mp5 clones. I've always thought the claw mounts were dumb, so the rail doesn't bother me. Each of the clones have their issues, and they have all climbed in cost... If I had to pay what a PTR goes for now, I'd think harder about which.

The internet is great for discussing things endlessly, but that is very much a double edged sword. I'd recommend seeing what you can actually get in-hand, and then evaluating pros and cons of those. I might have gone HK, if they weren't basically impossible to get and wildly overpriced because such.

The rail is welded on, if it wasn't, why have it there? I know folks have been getting ptrs and having the rail removed, that's a bit excessive, but hey whatever. You can certainly find pissing contests about "not a real HK" etc.. and you wonder who among those people has that real HK? If they do, you'd think they'd relax. If everything was available to me, I might not have chose something with a soft trunnion. Then weigh price, any known issues... and so on.

All kinds of stuff is going on in the courts, the bump-stock "ban" was just overturned, it seems like that decision will get the brace case also knocked out. All this should mean eventually that "assault weapon" bans are overturned, along with local bans on SBR's and suppressors... right? I hope so.

Whatever the product and path works for you, I'm sure it will be fine. Today is pretty amazing for mp5 clone choices, not all that long ago, pickings were pretty slim.

Wow, impressive new acquisitions. If you can’t own suppressors- not many states that could be. I’m thinking we may frequent the same gun shops.

Congrats & nice score!
Years ago (in the 90’s) I had genuine sp-89, HK-91, 93 & 94 and then in 2000 my last child was born in 2000, I did a really stupid thing and sold all 4 for 11k to start a collage fund for her. What a huge mistake that was and I’m still kicking myself as today they’re worth so much more … but at the time it seemed like a good idea and after adding to that account for 20+years she’ll graduate this spring with no collage debt, so there is an up side.

Meanwhile I’ve replaced them all with a Cohaire 89(mp5), Omega 5K & 5SD, the ugliest is a Century 93 pistol(like a 53), ptr-91 pistol and built to order 52(7.62x39), all are SBR’d and sear ready, unfortunately I only have one sear. If I sold them all I doubt it would be enough to buy just a genuine SP89. They all run perfectly.
Now I’m retired and it’s time to start thinking about what to keep and what to pass on to new owners the arthritis in my shoulders are kind of driving this thought process and I’ve been trying to take different firearms out to see what I can shoot comfortablely.

If you really want something you'll find a way ...
... if you don't you'll find an excuse.

I'm really not a "kid" anymore ... but I haven't grown up yet either Wink

Nice. Always wanted one. The prices made me shy away and picked up a 8" MPX years ago before prices went through the roof. I think it was around $800-$850 ish of GunBroker. Settled that that was the closest I'd probably get.

It's an outdated relic, and anything not HK is shadow trash... Whatever. If you've had some time with any select fire variant you know, and even just some range time with a semiauto clone, and the ergos, accuracy and recoil impulse are a piece of this iconic firearm. I chipped away at it.

I encourage everyone to take any opportunity to fire a variant of the Mp5 select fire. A rental range, or a friend you know.. do it. You don't have to clean it at the end of the day. Semiauto is enough of a treat.

I spent a lot of time and ducats on semiauto M14s, people will argue all kinds of shit, but sit them behind one and watch the tune change. Some things just have what the French call "I Don't Care What You Think."

I got to rent a select-fire MP5-SD. While I wouldn't want that specific version, it was worth shooting.

I was also lucky enough to have a friend who was a county sheriff and I got to fire their H&K MP5-SD. It was love at first sight.

I've had the pleasure of firing a few variants in auto, but the first one I ever did, was a coworkers Mp5-k with a can. Don't trust anyone who says they don't like the Mp5...

Here's a cool video on the history of MP5 use by US Special Forces from the 1980s-2000s, from Larry Gurwitch, a retired Green Beret and current Special Forces historian and firearms trainer:

(Also includes a brief discussion of UMP use as well, along with a neat explanation of the rise in popularity of the "shoot me first" vests that became all the rage with military contractors and mall ninjas during the 2000s.)
