HildurGeissele's Super Precision Scope in DDC - Color matching help
All my guns are black or stainless. No FDE, foliage, coyote brown, etc. Yeah, I know: boring but it is what it is.
While I was on vacation I bid on a Geissele Super Precision Scope in DDC (Desert Dirt Color) which is some sort of proprietary color that varies from the factory. Apparently the fanbois love this color and pay extra for it but I don't particularly care for it. Regardless, I won it on with a low bid so now I'm stuck with it.
It arrived in the mail over the weekend and I got to say I have no idea what I'm supposed to do with the color combo. Every Noveske keymod panel I have doesn't match it. Magpul colors don't match it. My mounted flashlight has a weird greyish tint that kinda matches it but really doesn't. I don't even care about perfect matches. I'd accept a "close enough" but nothing comes close. The scope came mounted in a GG&G quick release scope mount in black.
Here's my AR-15 collection:
Lowers (all black):
1 Noveske Gen2 (SBR)
1 Noveske Gen3 (color matched to Recon Upper)
1 Alexander Arms (pistol w/Sig brace)
Uppers (all black):
1 Alexander Arms 10.5" in 6.5 Grendel
1 Aero Precision 20" in 6.5 Grendel
1 VLTOR MUR / Noveske 8.5" in 300 Blackout
1 Noveske Recon 16" in .223/5.56 (matched to Noveske Gen3 lower)
1 Noveske Gen3 10.5" in .223/5.56
The Noveske Recon upper has the keymod NSR rail. The 20" 6.5 Grendel has a JP handguard.
The 8.5" 300 blackout and 10.5" Grendel both have quad rails
As for the 10.5" in .223/5.56 I'm not sure what I'm going to use for the handguard. I'm looking into a 7.2" NSR keymod rail but for the time being I could put on a black Magpul MOE that I have lying around.
Any ideas? I don't want to cerakote the Recon upper/lower as it's in mint condition and the color match is perfect. I could cerakote the Noveske Gen3 upper and whatever rail I put on it (most likely a NSR 7.2" down the line) but is a 1-6x optic really necessary on a 10.5" barrel .223/5.56 upper? I thought about putting it on the 10.5" Grendel upper as that will easily put kinetic energy at 600+ meters but I really don't shoot it that much, especially with this move to Puerto Rico. I'm open to suggestions.

Interesting option. Even though I'm not crazy about the color I want to keep the optic. I got it at a really good price and this is going to force me to put together an AR-15 rifle that isn't black like the rest. I'm overdue for an AR-15 in a color other than black and I'm going to use this as motivation to do something about it.

Sounds like it's time for black Krylon for the scope.
Black is a good gun color for gun owners who shoot a lot, and hit their targets.

Noted. I remedied the situation by buying another in black. Problem solved.
It's a bitch to match. I called a local Cerakote specialist and he's quite familiar with the DDC "color." Due to the anodized finish it's impossible to get something to match exactly. I didn't break out the Magpul color palettes but they didn't do much better than Noveske's:

P220 SmudgeThe problem isn’t that DDC never matches the other manufacturer’s colors. The problem is that they produce it in a range of colors that’s everything from a super light tan to the color of a brand new penny. I have some Geissele parts in DDC more like everyone else’s shade of tan 499, so it was easy to match them to stuff. Some guys wind up with the stuff that’s close to everyone else’s coyote. Looks like you wound up with the copper penny - you unfortunately aren’t going to match it with anything.

That’s the best advice. You’ll be setting a new trend for EBR color schemes.

LoswsmithI mean, in a sea of FDE guns and black rifles yours will stand out like a . . . what, sore thumb/red headed step child/bleached blonde at a party full of brunettes? You decide the simile but it will make it easy to find at classes and matches.
And the SCAR advice is spot on. For whatever reason FN just DOES NOT seem to give two figs about having a consistent FDE shade on a SCAR.

Problem solved. Got a black one for the Noveske. Got some cheapo $33 Coyote FDE rings off of Amazon that are a decent color match for a future "IDGAF" rifle build. Will probably go with some sort of bronze/brown/olive green/foliage color scheme. That's for another day.

LoswsmithWhat's that old saying about the military industrial complex? Oh yeah, "Why buy one when you can buy two at twice the price?"
Life is too short to not have what you want if you can fix it via an application of money.
