The Nagant carries it's cleaning rod in the stock under the barrel. If a careless conscript cleaned from the muzzle there would be the same kind if wear as there would be if they used a chain pull through. The Finns used cleaning rods. The main rod is stored in the stock under the barrel, and there's a separate pouch that has cleaning tips, T-handle, oil bottle, screwdriver, etc. Their cleaning kits also included muzzle protectors, to help minimize cleaning wear.
