I just traded into a Ruger 10/22 with a factory spiral bull barrel of some sort. It has a Magpul hunter stock, an Accu Tec bipod (I'm not familiar with this brand) and a vortex crossfire scope. I was planning to swap the barrel for a threaded one and possibly remove the bipod as I'm not looking for a dedicated benchrest rifle. This may change, of course. The more I play with it, the more I may get to appreciate it. I was also looking at changing the optic for a red dot. Anyone else have a Ruger 10/22? How do y'all set your up for field work/ small critter removal?

FWIW I mounted a Vortex Crossfire II 2X7X32 on mine. So far I’m happy with it but I haven’t gotten a chance yet to go groundhog hunting.
The only other things I changed was to add a extended mag release and the automatic bot release both made by Volquartsen.

IMHO, the choice of optics really depends on what you wanna do with it. The last time I had a 10/22 Target (like yours sounds to be) I had a 4-16 target scope and a bipod on it for shooting 100 yard bench sessions. My current 10/22 is more of a fun field gun and has a 16” barrel and a 1-6 LPVO (because I had it laying around). If I were to limit the fun to 50 yards, a red dot would be totally sufficient.
If you’re just looking for general use, most folks really seem to like the dedicated 2-7 rimfire scopes, like the Vortex Crossfire,etc.
Took the 10/22 to the range yesterday along with my Smith 17-9. I'm definitely thinking of changing the configuration of the rifle. I like thew scope, but the barrel and bipod need to be changed out. How much of a big deal is it to swap out the barrel of a Ruger 10/22? Is this something I can do at home or is this one of those things that requires a gunsmith?
I have six 10/22s with the only original Ruger part being the bare receiver, Barrel changes are not that hard for the most part. It will depend on the brand of the barrel though, Kidds were my toughest, my first was an early model Whistlepig that came with a piece of sandpaper for the Tenon area, My most recent was a Summit Precision that only needed a wack or two on my deck railing after I started the V block and snugged it. Part of the fun with 10/22s is assembling them into what you like.

RDS is surprisingly good on my charger clone(Brownells reciever, Beyer Barrel, Ruger guts), but the gun is accurate enough that I am looking for a 3x prism scope to replace it with. A smidge of magnification is nice for a gun that can make nice groups out to 50yds and a bit beyond.
I find with variable scopes I shoot the gun most of the time on full power, and almost never in a middle magnification setting.

The 22lr round is notorious for its rainbow-like trajectory. Red dots are fine if your target distances are close to your zero, or if you aren't picky about vertical dispersion.
Scopes offer the ability to dial/hold different elevations with great accuracy. Consider a low to mid power optic.

sounds like a factory target version (hammer forged barrel) Set up for benchrest,
change whatever you like, but that is about the best factory target version you can get,
