Ruger 10/22 bolt assemblies — hard to find! Login/Join

For several years, I’ve said “I’m going to build a 10/22.” It’s almost like building an AR, of course — the sum of the parts costs can easily be way greater than the cost of just buying a rifle. A great friend of mine said, “Fun! I’ll build one, too!” so I’ve been buying some of the bits and pieces two copies at a time.

Anyway… trying to stick to a reasonable budget (after buying a couple of really nice barrels), I’ve been searching for months for OE Ruger 10/22 bolt assemblies (B-10C). Usually seen at $40 or so at Midway, now they’re “out of stock, no backorder.” None of the other “usual sources” on my list have them.

I can get Faxon or Kidd or Volquartsen or the like, but doing so brings the cost to 3x-5x a simple OE assembly. What gives?

Aside from, “they’re the cheapest,” what’s making the original equipment bolt assemblies suddenly Unobtanium? And what’s my reasonably-priced alternative?

I don't see anybody at $40. But Ebay has a couple not too far from that.

Here's what I used to see on Midway's site:

I've seen a few on eBay, but been a little hesitant -- sometimes it's a "pig in a poke," so to speak.

I did see a couple on GunBroker last night, at about $75. I'll take another look tonight.

I usually check out SAP Outfitters for factory 10/22 parts. They only have a black one when I just looked and $70 for either black or silver if they are both in stock. Business must be good when you can buy factory rifles and strip them down to sell the parts.

Plus One foe S&P Outfitters. They usually have most all 10/22 factory parts on hand. Like everyone else they sometimes go out of stock but usually have the items back soon.

Check out their specials: Recently I was able to purchase 4 of their 10/22 factory trigger packs for $20 each and free shipping.

I've rebuilt a few 10/22s over the years and found the aftermarket parts may cost more, but were often not superior to factory parts. Starting with a used 10/22, particularly an older one, made the most sense to me. I replace the extractor with one that isn't stamped and put a new buffer in. After that, the rest is modifying factory parts. Other than a couple of vintage, Hogue-branded barrels, most of the ones I've come across still had sloppy chambers with excessive length. The bolts are rarely square and the headspace is excessive. Trigger groups aren't too bad to tune up, but the 10/22 just uses a less than ideal design.

Setting headspace and squaring bolt in surface grinder.

Shortening chamber and adjusting other barrel dimensions.

I finally broke down and ordered a couple from Brownell's. I'm not a bit unhappy about that, aside from the additional cost. And I'm not going to whinge much about that. They arrived this past Tuesday; all good.

And today brings email from SAP Outfitters -- they're back in stock!

Timing is everything, and patience is valuable....

I'm putting together a couple and was going to do the same thing for receivers and bolts. Then I found out about S&P so I'll be watching them.

I have a lady friend, lives alone, uses her 10/22 for light varmint control. I was over yesterday helping with a few things. Among the issues was her 10/22 was routinely jamming. I have visited that issue previously.

It’s an older gun, like 30+ years old. I told her it needed a deep dive, complete disassembly. I took it home & did just that, the action was VERY gritty. When done, lightly lubed it functioned fine.

I also gave her some fresh Winchester ammo I had over the older Remington she was using.

I was shopping online for some parts as I was considering building my own Charger wannabe.

The other day at work one of my managers said “I found you a 10-22 but it’s too nice to chop up”

So I went into the storage vault, here is a FOUR DIGIT serial number, circa 1965. Walnut stock, never had a scope mounted and two little scratches on the buttstock. And the price was very right!

So, it looks like my circa 1991 will get SBR, a threaded barrel and the folding stock mods now. And the @965 will get the Vortex Crossfire on it.

Hey, if anyone’s looking: I just got email from Midway — the Ruger OE bolts are in stock right now, 39 bucks.

Glad I read this thread.
Don’t really need a new bolt but you all introduced me to S&P outfitters. They have takeoff Red white and blue splatter US anniversary stocks for $80.
Not bad. I could not really bring myself to spend $500 on the full gun. I have a barely used pink and stainless 10/22 that I got my wife many moons ago.
She has not been shooting in a long time and it’s time for my boys to shoot more and they did not want to use the pink one.
So I’ll swap the stock.
Needed a few more bucks to get free shipping so Inadded the Tandem Cross trigger housing pins and and tougher bumper do my chassis charger.

Honestly not a huge fan of shooting 10/22s. I’ll take me a tube fed .22 all day over a 10/22.
HEY RUGER GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER AND GET THE MARLIN MODEL 60 ROLLING AGAIN.

I bought the 10/22 for my wife many moons ago simply because it was pink and it was like a week before Valentine’s Day.
We shot it a few times, she got pregnant and she quit shooting and just never started back up.
It has sat in the back of the safe ever since so like 12 years.
I stumbled upon a 10/22 charger for like $100. I then found the vast world of 10/22 aftermarket parts. I bought a chassis and a brace for it then I bought a Kidd barrel.
I find the tinkering with the 10/22 maybe more fun than shooting it.

I guess I’ll probably collect parts and build a new rifle for this stock and slap this back in ol pinky.
