I bought the gen 2 non adjustable version from AIM (11.5") on sale for $499. Of course the day it delivers, AIM posts the adjustable gas block version on sale. I already got different springs from FM weeks earlier to run it suppressed (I asked about suppressing and they just sent me springs at no charge). Built it and sometime during the middle of 60 rounds, I had some issues with the bolt locking back when the mags weren't empty. Cleaned and redid bolt catch and the issue stopped. I stuck a Midwest Industries folding stock on it (which went on sale for $20 cheaper a few days ago). I gotta stop buying stuff and wait for sales.

It fired fine with the stock folded.

Doesn't that always seem to happen?

I didn't even know Aimsurplus managed to get an adjustable gas block version. I thought they were exclusive to Rainier Arms. Maybe it just the 12.5/16".

If you haven't, check out Condavour Talks guns on YouTube. He has a bunch of vids on the FM uppers, including their evolution.

How do you like it? Just from internet browsing looks like a flimsy coat hanger.

I have my eyes on the Lage folder
https://max-11.com/364.php

The JMac looks solid but $300 is a solid price tag.

I’ll have a JAKL comparison video up in a few weeks. I’m putting it up against the FM15, BRN180s, Galil Ace, P556, Bren 2 and Yugo M85NP.

I can’t wait to hear your thoughts, Accomplice.

Meanwhile, I head over the the PSA site, notice upper kits are in stock, and only $650. Damn, that’s a nice price point. But… then, I notice the picture has a proprietary bolt catch. Uh oh. Looking at the bottom of the listing for more details, it includes this in the fine print:

quote:
Comes with proprietary JAKL bolt catch that must be installed on the lower for proper function

Must be used with JAKL buffer system found on PSA JAKL lower or lowers built with a PSA JAKL lower build kit. Failure to use the PSA JAKL proprietary buffer system may result in damage to the JAKL upper and lower.

That’s not a complete deal breaker, but, for a low cost fun product like this, I’d really like to retain the use of my registered lower with other uppers (like my BRN-180S). Is there any word about the functionality of these non-standard lower parts with a standard AR upper? Do I have to dedicate a lower to this? It gives me pause.

Don’t forget the $100 kit you need to make the Jakl function on a standard AR lower.

https://palmettostatearmory.co...dapter-assembly.html

To go between the Jakl upper and a standard AR upper would be somewhat of a pain as you would constantly be swapping the standard buffer tube, buffer, and buffer spring for the Jakl end plate and 1913 stock you decide to use.

There is a install video in the link I put above.

As for the BRN 180s not sure if it would work. Guess it just depends on how the end plates are machined and if it fits together I guess.

It’s going to take a few weeks to get all of the parts in I need to test these but I created a (practice) video with some first impressions of them.

I just watched your practice video there and your introduction monologue is almost 100% what was going through my mind when I was driving home from vacation this summer and lead me to looking at the PSA Jakl and the Foxtrot Mike guns.

We had absolute devastation due to flooding in the eastern portion of our state while we were away on vacation and our driving route home was altered.
I generally only take 2 handguns when I travel. The flooding got me thinking what if that flooding happened where I was traveling and we were stuck there because of it.
I wanted something super compact and a bit more
than a handgun.
So I quickly built up a 10/22 charger I already had. Side folder brace, 6” barrel (down from 10”), and a suppressor. Tiny and quiet.

Also knew I wanted a side folding gun but not an AR using a Law folder.

Got some rounds through the JAKL and a bunch of braced pistols today. It’s a sweet shooter. That triangle brace wasn’t anybody’s favorite though.

Saw a deal on youtube from Brassfacts saying the sled on his JAKL broke. Part that holds the charging handle. I think he or someone else identified it as looking weak and a point of concern.

I saw that too. PSA is pretty good about implementing fixes so I bet they’ll engineer a more robust sled pretty quickly (if there’s room to add material).
